Emergency workers had to remove the driver of a 2009 black, Honda Accord after the car veered off Prospect Avenue in Red Bank Saturday morning and crashed into a nearby fence.

The driver, James Mayer, 53, of Hillsborough, NJ, was traveling east on Harding Road and missed the turn and struck a cement slab, according to Red Bank Police Sgt. Robert Gannon. The driver attempted to back out and continue down Prospect and "lost control" and crashed into a fence that separates the yard of a Fair Haven home from the road, said Gannon.

Bernadette Dunphy, who's lived in that house for 23 years, said she was out dropping off recycling when the accident occurred around 9:20 a.m. She said she pulled in and saw emergency workers making their way through her yard to access the driver.

She said one of the Little Silver First Aid workers told her they were going to remove the driver through the opening in her fence, and she told him, "But there is no opening in the fence."

Mayer was removed on a stretcher and taken to the hospital in a Little Silver First Aid vehicle.

Dunphy pointed out the broken glass and bits of car pieces still scattered across the front of her property, along Harding Road, from an accident that occurred last week that took down a metal sign in front of her house.

Bruce Bareck, who's lived on the Red Bank corner of the intersection for 40 years, said it was one of the first accidents he can remember at the intersection since the traffic lights were installed last year.

Police from Red Bank and Little Silver were on the scene as were fire and first aid from both boroughs.

Gannon said the driver was taken to the hospital and no charges had been pressed as of yet.
