UPDATE: High Speed Chase in Tinton Falls Leads To Crash, Two Deaths

Car reportedly fled after being stopped by police

Two occupants of a car that was involved in a high-speed chase with the Tinton Falls police late Wednesday night are dead after a crash in the borough.

Monmouth County First Assistant Prosecutor Richard Incremona said two Tinton Falls police officers stopped a 2008 Subaru Impreza with three male occupants on Shafto Road around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday night. When one of the officers approached the vehicle, he spotted a .380 semi-automatic handgun in the car, the assistant prosecutor said.

Incremona said the officer grabbed the gun and immediately alerted the other officer about the gun. The driver then fled the scene at speeds "in excess of 100 miles per hour," as the two police officers pursued, Incremona said.

The driven then lost control of the vehicle after about a mile and half down the road and hit several trees on the side of the road. Two of the vehicle's occupants were ejected from the car and the third occupant was extricated by first responders.

Incremona said two of the vehicle's occupants are dead, but did not release any of their names and said he was unsure if one or both of the occupants who were ejected had died. He said the names would be released once their next of kin is notified.

The third occupant remains in critical condition at a "local medical facility," according to a release from the prosecutor's office.

Incremona said investigators also found a loaded 9mm handgun and several rounds of .380 caliber rounds in a plastic bag in the car after the crash. Anothr round was found on one of the deceased occupants.

He said no shots were fired by the police or the occupants of the vehicles during the incident.

The incident is being investigated by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, including its Major Crimes and Professional Responsibilities units. Tinton Falls Police, Wall Township Police, Monmouth County Sheriff's Office and the Monmouth County Serious Collision Analysis Response Team. MONOC, Wayside North and South First Aid and the Wayside Fire Department assisted at the scene.

Incremona said the investigation will also include a probe into whether the officers demonstrated "full compliance with state and county laws of pursuit."

I feel sorry for the two officers. They are going to be but through the ringer. They made a stopo, found illegal guns in the car, the driver takes off at a high rate of speed, loses control of the car, hits trees and two are killed. I do not see where the officers did anything wrong. The driver, for a reason only he knows, bears full responsibality for the deaths. I am just glad that innocent people and any police officers were injured or killed. Good job.

I'm sorry but i didn't read anywhere that it said the guns were illegal. Also, they were being stopped so they pulled over. Why not hide the guns, then? Please only talk what you know and not what you think. And as far as the officers doing anything wrong...accidents like this are why the police are not suppose to pursue through neighborhoods, no matter the suspects. Granted, he should not have ran but he not have been chased.

@Cotton.....the guns were both loaded and they had extra ammunition as well, in a baggie and in one of their pockets. They took off @ a high rate of speed and crashed within a mile 1/2 after they were pulled over. If they weren't doing anything wrong, why did they flee....just sayin! The police didn't have a chance to even pursue them.

You can't drive around with a loaded 9mm. The ammo and guns must also be in different areas of the car.

It's not illegal to have guns. It's illegal to have to have loaded guns in the passenger compartment of a car though.

Danny I too feel bad for the police officers that were just doing their job and for the firemen and emts that all tried to save their lives. Such stupidity has brought not just sadness to the families of the deceased but also to those that tried. Our Emergency Responders put their lives on the line for all every day and they have to live with these deaths forever as well.

Cotton, here is your missed civic lesson:

Laws for transporting a firearm in the State of NJ:
D. The firearm is unloaded
E.The firearm is not directly accessible from the passenger compartment of the vehicle
F.The ammunition is not directly accessible from the passenger compartment of the vehicle
G.If the vehicle does not have a compartment separate from the passenger compartment, the firearm and ammunition must be in a locked container other than the vehicle's glove compartment or console

Taken from: http://www.handgunlaw.us/states/newjersey.pdf

Also, the driver fled the scene and crashed only 1.5 miles from where the police had stopped them...going 100mph...how much of an actual "chase" do you think occurred by the time the officers got back in their car? Maybe you need a Physics lesson as well.

Steve, you really don't know if they were good citizens or not. For all anyone knows they could have been undercover officers or just some young men having a good time. YOU may not know. I could never down talk the police officers because I feel that most of them go above and beyond. But to judge some young men who may have made some mistakes or who may have been working is simply not right. You did not know their hearts. Or how outgoing one was while the other soft spoken. You don't know how they interact with friends and family. You simply don't know.

Curious as to the exact location, can't help but wonder if it's in the same barely safe at speed limit bump over that bridge on the south end of Shafto right before the ice rink that already claimed a girl's life when a truck lost control there and crossed over into oncoming traffic shortly after it was reconstructed.

We can feel for the public servants that risked their lives, but that is the careers they've chosen. What's done is done unfortunately. What concerns me the most is the mother of these young men. She didn't ask for this. So instead of focusing on the act, try focusing on the family and friends that experiencing the heartache and pain of losing two of their own.

There were three people in the car. they found two guns. How you can you not feel sympathy simply because they found guns. ONE of them did not have a gun (assuming the story is correct) so he surely was INNOCENT. Or maybe, just maybe the guns didnt belong to any of them just the car....do you know whose car it was? i didnt think so.

Lets be real. Everyone in the car knew there were guns. I'm sure they all have a past of drugs and guns. Just wait till all the details and names are released. I think you should stop acting so oblivious to the real world. The cops were just trying to take criminals off the street, and in this case it was obvious some serious criminals since they had guns and ammo.

How can one not focus on the act? They were criminals, and it was their chosen path that evening to drive in a vehicle with loaded weapons. If you carry illegal weapons, break the law, flee from the law, then you should suffer either the legal consequences or the finality of your poor decisions.

@TS
i think you are missing my point. Whether i get into a car that has a loaded gun in it or not (can you say for certain they the person other than the one who had it knew the gun was in the car), i di dnot ask the driver to drive away from the police. All i am saying is that everyone is saying that they got what they deserve. How can that be. ther eare people out here who commit murder, child rape and sodomy and all they serve is a few years in prison. And your telling me that DEATH is the punishment for carryinga gun and running from the police? And as far as the article about rahmel, did you notice it said he was wanted for a parole violation? That he did not have any record as an adult. yes, the headline was about a serial burglar but it was not him. Did you read it or did you just look at the pictures? Please do not misunderstand, i am not claiming that everyone is innocent but just because i was guilty or wrong about some things in my past, that does not AUTOMATICALLY mean I am wrong now. and how you say they had guns on them whether they were legal or not? if they were legal, what's the problem?

Answer me this, where in ANY of my comments did I say they deserved to die? I never said that, I said the made that decision to get into a car with guns and run for the cops and those were the consequences. That's a big difference from saying they deserved to die. The other thing with the guns it is a LAW that you are not to carry a loaded weapon in the car in the state of NJ the bullets and gun must not be together, they had LOADED guns in the car that's why I said wether the guns were legal or not, because they were loaded it was still against the law. That's my point.

What i am saying is that I, nor anyone on here, know if they were legal. and if they turn out to be illegal, our comments were made before we became aware of that fact. And please remember, the first amendment only carries you so far. It is not blanket immunity. people 9not just thing) run from the police for all sorts of reasons. It just is not right for US to comment about things we dont know. And from living n the area as long as I have, just because the police say something happened does not necessarily mean it happened that way. just like citizens do things they are not supposed to, so do police officers and almost everyone else with a lil power.

I don't get why people are implying 'they' got what 'they' deserved, when in fact there was only one person driving. So the two passengers were just as responsible for the outcome? That's not very fair. I also have to question how much of a 'police chase' this was, if they only got a mile away before losing control. Sounds more like they were trying to make a quick getaway, rather than the image of a high-speed pursuit as is being portrayed. This is just a sad tragedy all around, and I feel for the families involved along with the police officers and first aiders who had to witness the aftermath of careless actions. I live in TF and am grateful none of my loved ones were impacted by this event.

If they were "coming from a job" they wouldnt have ran all they would have to do is explain. This was just a case of kids not thinking right which led to this incident. Not only this but you would think they would have some common sense to put the gun somewhere else besides his lap. Why would u leave a gun in plain sight when a police officer was walking to your vehicle? Tinton Falls police is one of the best in NJ they all are amazing and most caring departments, i hope the best for the 2 officers that were involved. It's sad that the driver made the choices he did - that is what killed these men. As to Cotton's comments about us not knowing that the guns are illegal... come on sir, be real. The only way those weapons are legal to be in a vehicle either loaded or with unsecured ammo nearby (as cited in the report) would be if the driver or occupants possessed a permit to carry - and those are almost impossible to get in NJ... it's possible that the guns were legal, but it is also possible that pigs can fly.

For NJ, it is illegal for a Gun and Bullets to be in the SAME compartment in any vehicle. A secured and LOCKED gun can be in the glove compartment while the bullets are locked in the trunk. I am sure this was not the case.

"Or maybe, just maybe the guns didnt belong to any of them just the car...." Yeah right. Did you forget to read this crucial paragraph....
"Incremona said investigators also found a loaded 9mm handgun and several rounds of .380 caliber rounds in a plastic bag in the car after the crash. Another round was found on one of the deceased occupants."

Cotton you need to give up. You aren't making much sense. Getting pulled over its quite normal practice for another police officer to come on scene and "back" the other officer up. Regardless of who is pulled over, its common practice to do so. Police try to watch out for each other ESPECIALLY when they pull people over that have a car full of bullets and guns so they made the right choice having two officers.

This is a tragedy on many scales, people are being judgemental because you normally would assume that who else could have been hurt or killed by the drivers action not only with the car but carrying guns usually leads to no good. I have three children and they would not even know where to get a gun. Why-I have dedicated many years of teaching them what is right and wrong. That being said it is a big price to pay especially when live's were lost, if this story is to help another family get help for there children who may think that is cool to behave like this, get you children help even if you have to involve the police or your church if you believe their Doing things you can't control. In the end a family is devastated these Young people are gone and police doing there job will also live with this for years. I am sure they have families too and will always pray for the loss of these souls that were taken much too young.

Hey Cotton, How dare the driver of that vehicle put police and citizens in danger by driving carelessly and recklessly be disregarding the traffic laws of this state! You don't seem to answer that, yet you elude that you know the answers of every aspect here. Are they outstanding citizens? Are they in school or hard workers? Do they have the required permits for those handguns? Do they have arrest records or outstanding warrants for their arrest? So many questions no answers.

I am sure by now the police and prosecutor's office have the answers by now. This could have been much worse than it was had a child crossing the street been killed due the driver's total negligence and disregard of the law.

The police were doing the job my hard earned tax dollars mandate them to do. And, they were upholding their respective oaths of office--that if they violate--people would be screaming for their heads.

My hats are off to the police for taking two guns off the road and on manical driver off the road. It's sad that the driver also took the life of his associate in the vehicle--but that would be HIS fault--not that of the police.

Lets see: car chase at reckless and dangerous speeds--putting the people in the car including the police following them and bystanders in major jeopardy--CHECK; Weapons in vehicle--hmmmm, tough one, but I will say it is not normal to flee with weapons in the vehicle unless they were used or were about to be used. Sounds like the evidence is compelling and overwhelming that wrong doing and nefarious activity was taking place. OK , I believe I answered the questions.

No one knows the EXACT details of what took place besides the deceased, the officers, and the survivor. And not even the cops know the events prior to them pulling over the car. These young men made mistakes, yes, but I agree that people are so quick to speak speculation as fact. Everyone wants to play judge judy and speak on how they were DEFINITELY up to no good. We just simply dont know. Those boys were sons, fathers, cousins, and friends to many. Its not fair to pass judgement because some of US have family and friends or have commited crimes of our own and were never caught. We ALL make mistakes big or small. Why not be kind enough to atleast just offer condolensces to the family. Leave the negativity aside. Yes it's your right to say what you want but that doesnt mean you always have to! May God bless the Adams, Womack and Crawford family and all those affected by this tragedy.

NO ONE has any right to judge another person or persons. NO ONE should have to die a tragic death. Every one should let the family of these young men grieve with honor and dignity. The mother of these boys carried them in her womb for nine months, she felt them move, and grow; now she must bury them. The circumstances of their death is mute. There is no need for negative comments and judgement. Let is go!!

im pretty sure everyone on the comment page a family member who have made a bad decision in there life, if not yourself, however those two brothers are gone now and the other youngman is fighting for his life, no one deserves to die !! to be so coldhearted and ignorant on this page is really disrespectful to the family!!!! !!! ok granted someone was fullyloaded in the car, they never said who had it, the youngman pulled off out of fear because of what was in the car inwhich cost them there lives, that right there dont make them bad men, u guys are judging these youngmen because of the gun and the chase, gun wasnt fired, thugs would have fired !! all we know they could have been transporting the guns to someone and just got caught in the process, who knows and guess what we will never know !!! I dont know the family but as a mother, my heartbreaks for the young lady who loss her two sons and for the mother who son is in critical condition !! everyone who is passing judgement have or had some type of criminal activity in there lives, rather it was them or there child or a family member !!! may god continue blessing this family and put a heart inside the chest of theses coldhearted people on this comment page, one day it could be u!!

I keep reading how nobody on here knows what happened and therefore comments should not be made. Here is what we know: 3 people were in a car with handguns. The handguns were obviously in plain sight so it is safe to assume that all 3 occupants knew the weapons were there. So we can can blame the driver for taking off and blame the driver for the accident but you cannot excuse the other 2 occupants completely. They were responsible for where they were at the time of the accident and as such responsible for the outcome their lack of good judgement caused to occur. Lastly I keep reading how these were good boys who died tragically. They were men who made a bad decision and based on stories both on here and other newspapers it was not their first bad decisions in life. Bottom line is if you live that kind of life BAD things will happen to you and those around you. We need to stop making excuses for the decisions people make in life.

George, Really??? You just had to stick and twist the knife deeper into the heart of the mother of these boys to try and prove a point. The family and friends are grieving, let it go!!!! It is done!

Really???? Can we put it to rest. This mother lost 2 of her children.
“God, bring comfort and peace. Peace is your essence. Peace is your name. Bring peace to this family who has lost their precious child in death.
We come to you, God because we know that you sorrow, and are acquainted with grief. You too have endured the loss of a child. You empathize.
We can’t help but ask, “Why?” Forgive our insistence, our confusion, even our anger. We believe that you are just, and we ache to understand how this tragic death is an expression of that justice, how it expresses your love. We also know – in our minds at least – that you seldom answer the “why?” question. We press you, but on these matters you are mostly silent.
What we ask instead is “how?” How can we move forward? How can this bring us together and not tear us apart? How can we now live under the shadow of this untimely death? Answer this prayer with your comfort and guidance.
There is no way to remove the pain. The grief is real. The only sanity is to know, to believe, in a life beyond with you, when all the scales are righted and the sufferings are made good. We trust you and your promise that while this child’s life on earth is done, his life beyond has just begun. With that release we lose him and let him go into your arms, then by faith receive in return the boundless comfort of your presence. That is all, that is enough. In Jesus.”

@Tara...I can't imagine loosing a child, never mind 2. I pray for their family because no parent should ever have to bury a child. You are the one who said they were young men out having a good time, what does that have to do with misery loves company?

Everytime I hear about things like this that happen close to home I used to think it was bad guys from out of town. It is scary to think that these local guys were driving around with guns and ammo, nothing good could have come from it. The cops aren't perfect, but running from them is obviously a mistake.
