National Night Out Coming Back to Red Bank

The neighborhood crime fighting campaign

In an effort to foster community spirit and encourage crime prevention by engendering trust between law enforcement, political leaders and town residents, National Night Out Against Crime is returning to Red Bank Tuesday, Aug. 7.

National Night Out is held the first Tuesday of each year with the goal of building a partnership between the community and its police force. This year, Red Bank will host a neighborhood walk beginning at 6 p.m., followed by free food and refreshments supplied by the Red Bank Police Department.

The night out also includes family activities, children's games, giveaways, music, and information booths.

Last year's Night Out included several participating organizations providing a wide array of community services, including Red Bank Parks and Recreation, Red Bank Senior Center, Red Bank Public Library, the Boys and Girls Club of Monmouth County, Community YMCA and others.

Participation in the Night Out is free and is being held at Borough Hall at 90 Monmouth Street.

It would be great if more communities and non- profits could partner, and make this happen in other NJ towns.

Where? No specific location is given in this article. Where does the neighborhood walk begin? Where does it end? Is this a Westside event?

Last year, Chicago had National Night Out events and 243 people were murdered between January and July. This year there are already 308 murders between January and July. It would seem that the National Night Out events only work in neighborhoods that don't need it ?

Ken, it's sad but true...It appears that no matter what efforts are made to reduce crime etc, build good relationships with police, people seem to go back to their old habits and way of life...Sad. Wish I was wrong

There one thing I believe is important...People need to see Policemen out of uniform..They need to see that Police are regular people..Growing up in a small town I used to know all the Policemen in uniform and out of uniform in their regular clothes about town..I would see them in the local stores shopping etc..This establishes better relationships with the residents..Nowadays the only time you see police are in uniforms..You never see them off duty as a regular person..

When my dad was a kid, the police used to walk a beat and got to know all the kids in the neighborhood.

When I was a kid, a gang was a bunch of kids that would ride bikes together and play together.

Today, in some cities, a gang is more of a criminal element than a group of kids. Today, some gangs have a game where the winner is one who can knock out a stranger with one punch. One can also predict that none of those kids have a father and a mother who care. Very tragic situation. For the most part, show me a "bad" kid and I will show you a bad parental situation.
