PHOTOS: Ortley Beach Continues on Long Road of Rebuilding
Toms River Office of Emergency Management Coordinator supplies Patch with a tour of Ortley Beach.
With access to the barrier island still restricted to property owners and cleanup crews, Toms River Office of Emergency Management Coordinator Paul Daley provided a tour of Hurricane Sandy-ravaged Ortley Beach.
From the east end of the island, where surges wiped out boardwalks and tore down homes, to the west end, where 12 hours of flooding created large sink holes and untold amounts of property damage, Ortley Beach a month after Sandy's arrival on New Jersey's shores is still an image of destruction.
Work is being done and Daley is confident the barrier island will be restored. How long that will take, however, remains to be seen. The above are images shot Friday afternoon in Ortley Beach, which many claim was ground zero for Sandy's arrival.

Thank you Patch for not showing homeowners' personal items. Some media have shown the interiors of homes. The devastation is bad enough without making it worse for those affected.

Thanks to the Toms River Twp. for getting residents back onto the barrier island to start our clean-up. We are now hoping that entrance will not be limited after the completion of the gas lines. Also, we implore the administration to make every effort to build better, stronger dunes to protect the island.

Toms River Township is way behind other towns. They have had to be shamed into doing everything ( access, portable toilets, car decals, waiving electrical permit fees). They do not have a short term plan to this disaster, never mind a long term plan. They failed to properly plan for this storm by significantly re-enforcing our dunes despite having over a week of warning.
Lets face it Toms River Township elected officials are way way over their level of competence!
I'd like to the the written critiques of the Townships actions before, during and after the storm. Oh never mind no-ones going to bother to document anything!
We must succeed from this incompetent Township!

Still waiting for a Flood adjuster to see our home....our home was condemmed on 2nd ave...The insurance company assigned someone that didn't know how to work with small condos, & now they need to head back home since the island access has closed till the 18th for gas company. So frustrating....Isn't there a timeline for the adjusters to see your property? We have been waiting since Oct 31! The mold will reach my 2nd floor shortly, the only place I have left to salvage.. Vey sad & frustrated..
