Poetry Brings Memorial Day Reminder

Students from Shrewsbury Boro School offer insight into the true meaning behind Memorial Day with original poetry.

Memorial Day is a day to honor those U.S. Military men and women who have died in battle. Over the years, however, that message has become muddled, assaulted by barbeques, beach trips, and beer.

For students of Shrewsbury Boro School, the true meaning of Memorial Day will never be lost. As part of an annual tradition, students in grades sixth through eighth were asked to write a poem about Memorial Day. What their accumulated effort helped realize is that the memories of those servicemen who have died will not be forgotten.

At its Memorial Day ceremony, a student from each grade was invited to read his or her poem to the gathered crowd. Daniel Delgado represented the sixth grade class, Ella Brockway seventh grade, and Nicole Elizabeth Ortiz eighth grade.
