Does Manalapan have its own shelters for their citizens? Because of the magnitude of this storm bearing down on us, I would think we would have shelters to go to .

Would be nice too, to also have a listing of exactly what shelters are pet friendly. My understanding is ONLY Pinelands and Toms River North are accepting pets. I do not understand why our own town of Lacey could not open a school for residents and their pets. Instead, Lacey residents are either forced to risk themselves and stay behind or travel to Toms River or Pinelands and hope they have room for them. Why hasn't Lacey done more for their tax paying residents!!!

I see the list of shelters accepting pets, I stand corrected. HOWEVER, it still does not excuse Lacey for not having one of the schools open for residents and their animals. What happens if this storm really picks up and roofs are ripped off of homes, that are not under mandatory evac, and the residents need to seek immediate shelter. They are then forced to travel to Toms River with their pets on roads that are not safe to travel on. No reason Lacey could not do more and open one of the schools. And, these shelters that do not accept animals to me are not true shelters. Unbelievable.

AS Per NJ SPCA. Do not be intimidated into leaving your pets behind. If you end up at a shelter that does not accept animals I am told THEY will get your to a shelter that will. As per Gov. Christie take your animals with you. Any complaints about shelters refusing you due to animals, can be addressed to NJ SPCA AFTER the storm is over. Currently Pinelands and Toms River North High School are pet friendly.

Really? Not one school or facility in brick on the list. Huge town on the water and no shelters offered. That should be a crime.

I agree Elaine! I am an EMT/First responder who lives in Belmar and although there is an emergency evacuation I wouldn't even consider leaving without knowing I could bring my pet! Pets are domestic animals because we have domesticated them!! Most have NO CHANCE at survival mostly because we have raised and trained them to be reliant! I have a 100 pound pitbull who is 10 years old, arthritic and on meds!! NO WAY he could fend for himself! He case portable steps so he can get on the couch for Goodness sake! What a sin that there is no place to be safe with your pet! SHAME on LACEY TWP!!

This is because of the Politicians & Government officials that YOU voted for !! You bet your bottom dollar on the fact that THEY are ALL safe , warm & DRY with no care in the world !! PAY ATTENTION PEOPLE !! Get rid of the Dems &&& Repub.. GO for the little guy,, independent or Green. ANYTHING has GOT 2B better than who we have NOW....

I actually expected to read the patch today, not only for the latest updates on the storm, but see well wishes for each other in light of what we are in for. Well part of what I was looking for (the updates) are here - Thanks Patch. To those of you posting your complaints about the lack of shelters - If you are not able-bodied, I understand, but I'm sure our emergency people will assist you. To the rest of you, shame on you. We all have an individual responsibility to see to our own affairs, including our pets. This storm was predicted and announced days in advance. Everyone posting here and all over the area should have already planned for this. Again, If you are able-bodied, did not heed the warnings, and are taking it for granted our emergency personnel are going to take care of you, then, pathetic would be only one of many words I could use to describe you. For pet-lovers, I agree pets need to be considered (I have them as well), but it is my responsibility to care for them, not the government. I should not have to complain to the NJ SPCA for planning I should have done. I wish all of you well during this storm, and your pets too.
Perhaps after all of this is over, many of you can reflect, rather than complain, about the limitation of government, and the need to help ourselves and our families. As JFK once said "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what can you do for your country".

Holmdel board of ed permanently shut down their hs site as a shelter since irene. I think patch should investigate and do a story on this.

@old...I think "we" the people have already given WAY more than we should have ! In fact so much, it has turned into GREED to the point of them STEALING $$ it from us !

In Brick, the rumor I heard was the mayor and council could agree on when and where to open a shelter. I'm told both sides are currently consulting with their respective counsel.

leaving your PETS is like leaving your KIDS behind! I would NOT go ANYWHEre if they didnt accept my dog. Its not a matter of being 'cheap'. it's called 'dedication'.

Lets analyze this. We all love our pets and leaving them behind is not an option. What towns should do is have a section such as a classroom or corridor for pets. When the shelter closes, the pet area is cleaned thoroughly. Our governor told us to take our pets yet only 2 pet shelters in all of Ocean County. Someone needs to address this at the state level. In closing I will say Thank You to the hundreds of First Responders and Shelter Personnel working diligently for the safety of strangers. May God Bless Us All.
