My wife and I have been taking our kids to this fair for years, and they always have a great time. They love the food, the rides, the live animals... pretty much everything. I see this year's fair includes a show named "Dock Dogs" that I don't recall from the past. Based on the description, though, it sounds like something we'll have to be sure to see.
A little info on the "too expensive" theory, from the Monmouth County Parks website:
"Admission $7.00 * Ages 12 & under admitted free * Free Parking
Pay-one-price rides ($18 wristbands) on Wednesday, Thursday & Sunday
Free admission for ages 65 & up on Senior Day - Sunday, July 29th
Free admission to active duty military personnel (with ID) on Sunday, July 29th"
Well, we went last night, and had a great time, as usual.
As far as expense, eating dinner at the fair can definitely run up your bill. The food was good, but got pricey fast. I think we'll be eating before we go, next year.
I live on a fixed income. I can't afford to say "once a year, OK to splurge." There are too many "once a year" things like birthdays and Christmas etc. My son has 4 kids so thats $21 (2 adults +1 kid over $12), $72 for POP for the kids rides and at least $30 for food. Easily over $100. There is nothing cheap about that. I'd rather stay home and BBQ.
gjc - i didn't realize you have to support your son and his kids. i would be treating MY mother not the other way around, but that's me. I usually eat at home and get "fair food" at the fairs as a dessert/snack type thing! zeppoles! yum! and my kids go on a few rides a piece and that's it. guess we live different lives. I'm still going ! LOL

I didn't say that I support my son, wife and his kids. He earms enough to pay the bills for his family but in today's economy there is nothing left over for fluff. And let me remind you that school is coming up soon and money is needed for back-to-school supplies. What's more important, school or the county fair?
I pay my own way with my bills and I would never expect any of my children to pay anything for me. Besides the love and respect that I get from my son and grandchildren is priceless. Sadly, we place too much emphasis on "things" instead of what really matters in life.

But i also think things in moderation are fine. Why let them miss out on an experience? Just to people watch n get an ice cream cone, see what its like, etc . Oh i forgot ... Too hot and dusty.

I have a lot of other issues why I don't go to the fair such as I'm in a wheelchair. You would absolutely be amazed at how many people try to run down wheelchair people including kids. The bottom line is that when folks like me say they are not going to the fair, trust that they have good reasons. Not everyone is financially comfortable and not everyone is healthy. To assume that your standards of inexpensive and fun applies to everyone is unto itself "unfair."

Wow... such happy, shiny people around here.
