RBR Project Prom Shows Kids the Horrors of Drinking and Driving [VIDEO]
The high school simulated a drunk driving accident for its senior class and spared no details - including the body bags.
As a parent, even though I'm well aware that what I saw was staged, the effect was chilling.
On Friday morning, right before the long Memorial Day weekend, I arrived to find three automobiles smashed and tipped over in the Red Bank Regional parking lot as part of the high school's annual Project Prom. The dramatic simulation on May 25 of a multiple vehicular accident caused by drunk driving and its emergency response from area first aid, police and fire personnel is a diorama of every parent's worst nightmare.
"What you just saw is about as real as we can get it," Little Silver Police Officer Pete Gibson, who's the resource officer for the high school, told the crowd of students gathered to watch the dramatic exercise.
Emergency vehicles swarmed through the school's entrance with wailing sirens and for the next hour, emergency workers from nearby towns worked tirelessly to free victims trapped within the vehicles while the senior class looked on. The Class of 2012 will hold its Senior Prom on Friday, June 1 at the MerriMakers Reception Center at the PNC Arts Center in Holmdel.
“Every 30 seconds someone is killed in this country in a vehicular incident, and year after year federal statistics demonstrate that a disproportionate amount of those fatalities are young people celebrating their prom season with alcohol in an automobile," according to Gibson, who oversaw the mock crash. "We do this program so that our students will pass another prom season without adding to those sobering statistics.”
Following the mock crash exercise, students returned inside to hear sobering tales from speakers who shared their real life experiences, like a mom who lost a child in a drunk driving accident and a 21-year old Jackson resident who is on his way to prison for seven years for rear ending a minivan while drunk and killing the driver.
"Stuff like this doesn't happen to people like us," Joy Jones of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, whose son Steven was killed just shy of his 20th birthday told the senior class. "I'm here to tell you that stuff like this does happen to people like us."

How about we teach kids about responsibility and moderation instead of using fear as a primary education tool?

What is the point of sheltering them from what happens in the real world. That's the biggest problem with kids today everyone wants to hide them from what happens in real life. Real mistakes cause real consequences and punishments.

Real life isn't that you have one drink and end up killing people and yourself. Real life is that if you're responsible, those things don't tend to happen.

How about the parents stop drinking and buying alcohol and having parties for their kids? I have seen too many parents who think drinking with their friends is cool what kind of message does that send the kids? I was witness to a drinking party with the RBR kids and the cops were called the arrogance of the kids was unreal.. No consequences at all. The cops did nothing because they were probably afraid the parents would sue. Parents step up and do the right thing and teach your kids what's right and wrong at home. Reminder drinking under the age of 21 years is illegal even if it is in your home and STOP buying booze for your kids.

I agree with you Susan but we need programs like this to remind our children why we don't want them to drink and drive. It is a shame that we can't do this for the underclassmen as well. Too many of them are already drinking and will soon be getting permits and licenses. In the meantime talk to your kids and pray that they listen.

There will always be Drinking. People Drink = Adults Drink, Adults Drink in front of their Kids, Adults are People, Kids are People = People Drink. Many words can be used in this equation in place of the word Drink, such as = Argue, Fight, Kill, Love, Live, Die, etc. The variable in the equation is equal to the Solution of the equation. It's very simple = just do the math.
