Senate OKs Jan. 11th 'Clarence Clemons Day' in NJ

Resolution sponsored by Red Bank resident Sen. Jennifer Beck

One of the Jersey Shore's most iconic figures will be honored annually with "Clarence Clemons Day" each Jan. 11.

The state Senate last week passed a resolution sponsored by Red Bank resident Sen. Jennifer Beck that memorializes the legendary saxophonist from Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band.

Clemons died last year at the age of 69 after suffering a stroke.

“The New Jersey Shore would not be the same without the music of Bruce Spingsteen’s E- Street Band,” said Beck, a Republican legislator.

“And the E-Street Band would not have been the same without the sound of a saxophone played by Clarence Clemons. For me as a resident of Red Bank, where he once owned a rock club, the loss rings ever more true. New Jersey lost an icon last year, an inextricable part of our shoreline’s cultural history that started by a happenstance meeting between Bruce Springsteen and the 'Big Man' in Asbury Park in 1972.”

Clemons was a founding member of the E- Street Band, playing with the group from its inception in 1972 until his death in 2011. He attended the former Maryland State College (University of Maryland Eastern Shore), where he played football until a knee injury ended his career.

Before Clemons joined the E-Street Band, he worked as a youth counselor in Newark.

 His other professional endeavors included solo recordings, collaboration with artists from Aretha Franklin to Lady Gaga, several movie roles, and a stint operating a music club in Red Bank called Big Man’s West.

Really is this necessary? With a state with high taxes, high unemployment, and corruption--can't State Senator Jennifer Beck be involved in others issues like:
1. Demand a probe of her friend at the Monmouth County Sheriff's Department, former Sheriff Kim Guadagno, regarding the pension fraud that emanated out of Senator Beck's district;
2. Repeal Kyleigh's Law that Jennifer Beck sponsored which put a target (red sticker on license plate) on the back of our teenagers.
3. Tell her constituents why she refuses to divulge what "charity" she donated convicted fraudster Solomon Dwek's campaign contributions to.
4. Sponsor legislation to ban assault weapons that are killing our children

I know NJ has a love affair with bruce & company, & celebrities in general, and Clarence Clemens may be "an icon", but what did this guy really do, to deserve an observance day? What about observance days for NJ military who have died in combat? Where are our priorities?

It's called Veteran's Day and it honors not only those that died, but additionally have serve their country. As for what he did, among them were to help break the barrier for black artists, he was a role model for his community, he worked to rebuild the NJ shore particularly Asbury Park and it's music community and he was an ardent supporter of charities such as, Little Kids Rock which helps to provide music education to children in low income communities and Home Safe which helps provide innovative services to children and families at risk for abuse, just to name just a few.
