Severe thunderstorms accompanied with heavy wind and rain quickly swept over Monmouth County Thursday evening, knocking utility wires on top of centenary wires over the NJ Transit train tracks in Middletown, according to NJ Transit spokesman John Durso, Jr..

NJ Transit closed the North Jersey Coast line at about 8:30 p.m. while crews worked to remove the utility wires from the track, Durso, Jr. said. The line remained closed for about 40 minutes, causing train delays.

According to Middletown Sgt. Ernest Volkland, the incident happened about 1,000 feet north of the Middletown NJ Transit Station.

Officers from the Middletown Police Department and the NJ Transit Police Department secured the scene while NJ Transit crews made the necessary repairs, Volkland said.

As of Friday morning, NJ Transit no longer reports delays on the North Jersey Coast line, according to their website.
