Republicans: Now You See Them... Now You Don't

A party nominating convention is intended to showcase who you are and what you are as a candidate and party leading to a national election, but it is now clear that the GOP has an “identity crisis."

The face that the GOP will display at the convention in Tampa is not the same as they touted a few months ago and drastically different from their persona in 2010. The Republican Party has so many multiple personalities that they make Sybil from the 1976 movie appear relatively well adjusted.

To begin with… where’s the Tea Party? It is obvious from the GOP convention speakers list that the Tea Party is now persona-non-grata. Where is the Tea Party favorite Sarah Palin that “fired up the conservative base “at the last GOP convention? Maybe this time she will be busy firing up her wood stove for the coming Alaskan winter.

Palin will not be the only Tea Party star absent from the GOP limelight. Where’s Michelle Bachmann? Is she too radical or just too crazy for the new Romney/Ryan Republican Party? Perhaps Michelle Bachmann is absent because while campaigning for her own nomination she referred to Romney a little too often as a RINO, Republican in name only.

What about other Tea Party frontrunners like pizza magnate Herman Cain or Texas Governor Rick Perry, neither of whom will be allowed to get near the podium. Let’s not forget Tea Party Birther champion Donald Trump who will also be MIA from the Republican Platform.

So what’s the deal, why has the Romney/Ryan ticket excluded the Tea Party? Well actually the answer is pretty simple; despite all the claims of grassroots support the Tea Party does not appeal to independent voters, and those voters will play a major role in the coming election drama.

Now I have my fundamental differences with the Tea Party movement but I must give them credit, grudging though it may be, for one thing and that is they are consistent. The Tea Party knows what they want and they are sticking to it, but Romney, he is the “Teflon Candidate." Romney stands for nothing and everything all at the same time, whatever way the political wind blows he flip-flops with it. Romney has always been pragmatic in both his private and political life and he is not going to change now.

The Tea Party is being excluded from the GOP convention for the very same reason they came to prominence in the first place, they fire up the conservative base, but the conservative base will not win a national election as the McCain/Palin ticket proved in 2008. Both Romney and Ryan realize that as their Republican Party moves into the future they need independent voters more than they need the Tea Party. If Romney could he would outsource the Tea Party to India or China but they don’t want them either.

Now Ron Paul is a different story but none the less Romney has silenced him too. Instead of allowing Ron Paul his rightful place at the Republican convention table Romney has instead delegated his entire campaign to the few moments of a video tribute but no live address. All that campaigning by Ron Paul supporters and all those earned delegate votes now mean nothing at the hands of Romney.

I think it is important to remember that Romney has always been about perception and not reality. Concentrating on perception allows you to erase your own past actions as well as those of the political party that you represent. Hence we will not see any trace of President George W. Bush or his VP Dick Cheney at the Republican National Convention. In the eyes of Romney they represent an unpleasant realty that he is trying desperately to hide from the American people.

Bush and Cheney represent failure, nearly a decade of Republican policy failure. Their very presence would rekindle unpleasant memories of war, torture and economic collapse, a reality that the entire Republican Party is running from as much as they are running against President Obama. When Romney and Ryan talk about looking forward it is because the Republican past is a disaster for the American Middle Class, women’s rights and equal opportunity in America.

Romney wants to portray himself as competent, but that is just a perception, the reality is that the GOP and their leaders have repeatedly brought the United States to the brink of economic and social collapse. But like the Russians erased the memory of Stalin, the Republicans think they can also erase their own failure, this election will determine if they succeeded in that endeavor.

The majority of republicans that liberals tend to dislike and complain about will not be at the RNC. So now you are complaining that they won't be there? Do you just like to complain?

I just don't understand people who deal in absolute....on either the right or the left. Everybody needs to compromise or nothing will ever get fixed in this country.

Agreed Jim. Never seen such divisiveness being encouraged by both sides, although I know where it originated into the us against them mentality.There is no middle ground; that's why nothing gets done and we are all feeling the effects. Perhaps it will change when our incumbent can do differently as he said to Putin after the election. Yikes. Go see movie 2016

The GOP of yesteryear have embarrassed themselves and cannot be seen in the light of day. Noone is complaining. We don't miss them. It is merely an observation. If those of you who insist on supporting the party of NO would exercise a little more observation instead of knee-jerk resistance, we might not be in the mess we are currently in. It is no longer the party of Ronald Reagan. Your party is scary. If you vote them in you deserve what you will get.

Mr Griffiths: Politics is all about perception! How's that expression go...fool me once...fool me twice. . .you might not like it or even get angry...and then get turned off. . .but what's the alternative. . .tell the truth!. . .That lost George Romney the Republican nomination when he told the truth about what was going on in Vietnam. Human nature has made telling the truth...a kind of "catch 22". . .when it comes to politics. So I guess we'll continue to see. . . the spending of hundreds of millions of dollars on deception. . .what is called perception.

I think both the Democrats and Republicans are either in denial or do not want to discuss the vast amount of people leaving both parties to become Independents or what New Jersey officially calls "undeclared". This is a huge majority of people that don't like either Obama or Romney. People are tired of the fighting between the two parties, party bosses and basically both parties have become unrecognizable almost melding into one. I believe there is a huge change coming politically and I'm not the only one. Party heads have also noticed the departure of the once faithful on both sides of the house. We the people are tired of the blaming and the name calling and finger pointing and NOTHING gets done in Washington or on a state or local level. I think this election is going to be one for the history books and I think a message is going to be sent to the politicians that their little clubs are going to be disbanded and they will actually have to work together, start solving the problems facing this nation or be fired. I believe a lot of long time politicians that have held office for years will be replaced all over this nation. People are tired and when they get tired they get angry and when they get angry they take it out in the voting booths. By the time this is all over, politicians will no longer pander to their own but have kiss the asses of the Independents to stay in power. Keep playing the game, both sides will lose.

As usual I agree w/ so much of what you say Joe, but in light of the GOP recent exclusion of Ron Paul, I reserve optimisim that there will be political change. Regardless of how anyone feels about Ron Paul's political leanings - the fact that his platform was shut out should be of concern to all. The question is can a grass roots - (online?) organized political alternate ever beat the megabucks lobbying process we now have from the two more of the same bozo parties. Also problematic is the fact that one still cannot declare oneself as an independent. In order to vote in a primary one has to be declared a Bozo. Many people stay declared Rep./ or /Dem based on the fact that they will be registered at least half of the time. This mandatory declaration is I think unconstitutional and should be enforced as such. It is clearly time for organizing an alternative to what we have seen in the past two decades.

Is anyone as offended as I am when these phony politicians try to connect with us by having themselves photographed with a beer. Is that what they think of us.

These people are all super wealthy Jack@#$ who have lost connection with the real world and common people. Republican or Democrat..it's all wealthy out of touch people in power. As long as the white middle class remain unorganized and not seen as a voting block it will remain as such.

Drink a beer, eat a hotdog, kiss a baby, pick a pocket or two. All in a days work. I think it does bother a lot of people WM and you are right on target with the disorganization.

Name one Democrat or Republican in office at the local, state, or feder that would do the following:

* Repeal "Obamacare"
* Audit the Federal Reserve;
* Dismantle the Department of Homeland Security; enable the other alphabet soup agencies to do their respective jobs;
* Prosecute businesses hiring illegal immigrants;
* Dismantle the TSA; again, turn it over to respective alphabet soup agencies.
* Profile air travelers based on their history and/or probable cause; end the Constitutional abuses at our airports.

Romney is going to have a debate with himself prior to the debate with President Barrack Obama so he can figure out who he is and what he stands for.

Romney just tells you what you want to hear...

Republicans, do yourself a favor and don't vote. Chris Crisco will start his dramatic weight loss journey over the next few years and could be your president.

Do you really want Mitt Romney for possibly 8 years?

Way more to talk about on the FED, but Rob Harrington and Aaron Krowne are better orators on the subject and our proposed solution. Will introduce them before the election.

First day on this site. Seems like it runs about 50/50 on political points of view. Interesting stuff.
