Monmouth Medical Center Lung Cancer Screening Program Joins Prestigious International Organization

Monmouth Medical Center, a Barnabas Health facility, recently announced it has joined the International Early Lung Cancer Action Program (I-ELCAP), an international, collaborative group consisting of experts on lung cancer and related issues from around the world.

Comprised of dozens of institutions throughout the world, I-ELCAP’s mission is to achieve early diagnosis, treatment and ultimate cure of lung cancer through the rapid dissemination and advancement of research among a diversified, collaborative network. Monmouth Medical Center is among six I-ELCAP sites in New Jersey, including Barnabas Health sister hospitals Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and Saint Barnabas Medical Center.

"As a comprehensive cancer program, modern low-dose CT screening enables us to detect and ultimately treat lung cancer in its earliest most curable stages. As an I-ELCAP center, we have committed to ensuring high-quality, early detection lung cancer screening and advanced treatments are made available to those in our community,” said Loki Skylizard, M.D., FCCP, Chief of Thoracic Surgery, Director of Minimally Invasive and Robotic Thoracic Surgery and Director of the Thoracic Surgical Oncology Program at Monmouth Medical Center.

The only hospital to serve as a screening site in Monmouth and Ocean counties, Monmouth Medical Center’s Lung Cancer Research Screening and Lung Nodule program utilizes low-dose CT scans to screen candidates and detect lung cancers before they can be seen on x-rays. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends annual low-dose CT screenings for individuals between ages 55 and 79 years old and are current or former smokers. When lung cancer is diagnosed at an early stage (Stage IA ), and treated, the survival rate increases to more than 70 percent. The best way of increasing the chances of curing lung cancer is to find it early.
