Monmouth Medical Center Presents August Community Health Education Programs

LOOK GOOD, FEEL BETTER
Monday, August 4 from 1 to 3 p.m.
This is a special program sponsored by the American Cancer Society for women cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiation. Learn to cope with the side effects of treatment and feel comfortable with changes in your appearance by receiving a personal makeover by cosmetology professionals. This program will be held at the Community Meeting Room at Monmouth Medical Center, located at 300 Second Avenue in Long Branch. Registration is required by calling the American Cancer Society at 800-227-2345. Free.

KEEPING YOUR MIND SHARP
Tuesday, August 5 at 11:30 a.m.
Just like our bodies, our minds require regular care and maintenance. During this free program, Carol Palmer, BA, a Monmouth Medical Center Program Instructor will discuss the effects of normal aging on the memory and help you discover what’s normal and what’s not. Learn ways to improve brain functioning and enhance memory as well as specific “brain exercises” to prevent senior moments. This program, for ages 60 and over, will take place at the Keyport Senior Center, located at 100 Second Avenue in Keyport. Registration is required by calling 732-264-4916. Free.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR OPTIONS FOR REHABILITATION
Tuesday, August 5 at 4 p.m.
It can be overwhelming to choose the right level of therapy for yourself or a loved one during a hospitalization for a stroke, fracture or other life-altering event. During this one-hour session, Jill Garaffa, OTR/L, HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Tinton Falls, will discuss all levels of therapy including home therapy, in-patient acute and sub-acute rehabilitation and out-patient rehab and prepare you to make the best decision on rehabilitation for yourself or a family member. This program will take place at HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Tinton Falls, 1st floor conference room, located at 2 Centre Plaza in Tinton Falls. PHYSICIANS’ NIGHT AT THE LAKEWOOD BLUECLAWS

Stop by The Unterberg Children’s Hospital at Monmouth Medical Center’s Safe Kids Chapter table for sports safety information to keep your young athletes active, healthy and injury free this summer. Physicians’ Night will take place at the Blue Claws Stadium, First Energy Park located 2 Stadium Way in Lakewood.

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT AGAINST CRIME
Tuesday, August 5 from 6 to 9 p.m.
Stop by The Unterberg Children’s Hospital at Monmouth Medical Center’s Safe Kids Chapter table for information about keeping children safe this summer. Spin the Safe Kids Wheel and answer a safety-related question to win a prize, everyone’s a winner! This fun-filled evening, co-sponsored by the Long Branch Police Department and United Neighbors Inc. will take place at Slocum Park, located at 43 Slocum Place in Long Branch.

DIABETES SELF-MANAGEMENT SERIES
Fridays, August 8, 15, 22 & 29 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Learn how to manage your diabetes by attending this four-session diabetes education program focusing on diet, nutrition, glucose monitoring, medications, meal plans, prevention and treatment of diabetes complications, dining out and benefits of exercise. The program is taught by a registered nurse and a registered dietitian/certified diabetes educator. It will be held at The Center for Diabetes Education at Monmouth Medical Center, located at 300 Second Avenue in Long Branch. For information and to register for classes, call 732-923-5025. FREE GLUCOSE SCREENINGS
Thursdays, August 14 & 28 from 11 a.m. to Noon
A simple finger stick to test blood sugar to determine if glucose level is elevated. The test will be performed by a registered nurse. This program will be held at the Center for Diabetes Education at Monmouth Medical Center, Classroom #A001 in the Maysie Stroock Pavilion, located at 300 Second Avenue in Long Branch. SAFE SITTER
Saturday, August 16 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Presented by certified Safe Sitter instructors, this program teaches 11- to 13-year-olds to be responsible, creative babysitters with special emphasis on how to handle emergencies. This course will be held at Monmouth Medical Center, located at 300 Second Avenue in Long Branch. To register, call 732-923-6990. $50 per child.

WEST END CRUISE NIGHT
Saturday, August 16 from 6 to 10 p.m.

CREATING HEALTH: HOW TO OVERCOME THE 10 MOST COMMON OBSTACLES TO LIVING A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

Statistically speaking, about 80% of chronic diseases and conditions can be prevented and managed through lifestyle choices. While most of us know intellectually that we need to eat healthier, get more exercise and manage stress, there's a gap between having good intentions and actually finding the time and energy to make it happen. Attend this empowering class to begin to shift your mindset and create momentum to transform your lifestyle behaviors to improve your health. During this program, Jill Garaffa, OTR/L, PCC, ELI-MP, will give you the practical tools and strategies to get you started. N.J. BARIATRIC AND METABOLIC INSTITUTE (NJBMI) AT MONMOUTH MEDICAL CENTER: NEW PATIENT WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY LECTURE
Thursday, August 28 from 6 to 7 p.m.
If you are 100 pounds or more overweight, you can’t afford to miss this educational lecture which will explain everything you need to know about weight-loss surgery. For those considering a bariatric procedure, this program is presented by Frank Borao, MD and Steven Binenbaum, MD, board-certified, laparoscopic-fellowship-trained surgeons who will offer the most up-to-date information on gastric bypass surgery, gastric banding and sleeve gastrectomy.
