Monmouth Medical Center Presents June Community Health Education Programs

LOOK GOOD, FEEL BETTER
Monday, June 2 from 1 to 3:00 p.m. 
This is a special program sponsored by the American Cancer Society for women cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiation. Learn to cope with the side effects of treatment and feel comfortable with changes in your appearance by receiving a personal makeover by cosmetology professionals. This program will be held at the Jacqueline M. Wilentz Comprehensive Breast Center at Monmouth Medical Center, located at 300 Second Avenue in Long Branch. DIABETES SELF-MANAGEMENT SERIES 
Mondays, June 2, 9, 16 & 23 from 5 to 7 p.m.
Fridays, June 6, 13, 20 &27 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Learn how to manage your diabetes by attending this four-session diabetes education program focusing on diet, nutrition, glucose monitoring, medications, meal plans, prevention and treatment of diabetes complications, dining out and benefits of exercise. The program is taught by a registered nurse and a registered dietitian/certified diabetes educator. It will be held at The Center for Diabetes Education at Monmouth Medical Center, located at 300 Second Avenue in Long Branch. For information and to register for classes, call 732-923-5025. UNDERSTANDING YOUR OPTIONS FOR REHABILITATION
Tuesday, June 3 at 4 p.m. 
It can be overwhelming to choose the right level of therapy for yourself or a loved one during a hospitalization for a stroke, fracture or other life-altering event. During this one-hour session, Jill Garaffa, OTR/L, HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Tinton Falls, will discuss all levels of therapy including home therapy, in-patient acute and sub-acute rehabilitation and out-patient rehab and prepare you to make the best decision on rehabilitation for yourself or a family member. This program will take place at HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Tinton Falls, 1st floor conference room, located at 2 Centre Plaza in Tinton Falls. BREAST HEALTH AND SCREENING MAMMOGRAPHY
Wednesday, June 4 at 1 p.m.
Every woman should have an action plan for breast health. Although we don’t know how to prevent breast cancer, we do know that successful treatment is greatest with early detection. Join Sumy Chang, MD, Surgery, Jacqueline M. Wilentz Comprehensive Breast Cancer at Monmouth Medical Center, to learn about the importance of mammograms, screening guidelines for early detection and other recommendations for breast health awareness. ART IS GOOD HEALING ARTS WORKSHOP
Sunday, June 8 from 1 to 3 p.m.
This healing arts workshop offered by The David S. Zocchi Brain Tumor Center is not therapy for those whose lives have been impacted by the diagnosis of a brain tumor, but rather a form of expression either through creativity, friendship or just being. Appointments with a social worker are available upon request. This workshop takes place at Surf Taco located at 1003 Main Street in Belmar. GLUTEN-FREE DIET
Tuesday, June 10 at 11:30 a.m.
A gluten-free diet is one that excludes the protein gluten found in grains such as wheat, barley, rye and triticale. This diet is used to treat celiac disease to control signs and symptoms and prevent complications from gluten. Join Nicole Cerillo, RD, Celiac Program Clinical Manager, Kogan Celiac Center, Monmouth Medical Center, to learn about the benefits of a gluten-free diet and how to eat a healthy, balanced diet if considering a gluten-free one. NATURAL WAYS TO MANAGE DEPRESSION
Wednesday, June 11 at 1 p.m.
Are you experiencing persistent feelings of sadness, emptiness and fatigue, feeling recession depression or Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)? You may be experiencing depression. Depression can impact your energy, sleep, appetite and physical health. This program, presented by Carol Palmer BA, Monmouth Medical Center Program Instructor, will discuss natural approaches that may help you feel better. FREE GLUCOSE SCREENINGS
Thursdays, June 12 & 26 from 11 a.m. to Noon
A simple finger stick to test blood sugar to determine if glucose level is elevated. The test will be performed by a registered nurse. This program will be held at the Center for Diabetes Education at Monmouth Medical Center in classroom #A002 in the Maysie Stroock Pavilion, located at 300 Second Avenue in Long Branch. HEART SAVER CPR/AED PROGRAM
Saturday, June 15 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Babysitters, parents and grandparents are encouraged to attend this course that provides automated external defibrillator (AED) training to laypersons and also teaches how to recognize a medical emergency, adult, infant and child CPR, first aid for choking victims and the use of barrier devices to reduce the risk of infection. This class will take place at Monmouth Medical Center, located at 300 Second Avenue in Long Branch. HEART SAVER FIRST AID
Saturday, June 15 from 1 to 4 p.m.
This is a credentialed course intended for individuals with a duty to respond to a first aid emergency. The course contains information on how to manage illness and injuries in the first few minutes until professional help arrives. Note that CPR is not part of this program. Techniques learned from the course can be tailored for both adults and children. The program will take place at Monmouth Medical Center, located at 300 Second Avenue in Long Branch. MINDFULNESS MEDITATION
Wednesday, June 18 at 1 p.m.
Racing thoughts, upsetting feelings and unpleasant events can disturb our inner peace and increase anxiety and depression. New brain science has discovered how mindfulness mediation can give control over levels of stress, depression, anxiety, chronic and acute pain. We understand that grief is a process that is difficult to experience alone. Everyone mourns differently and at different rates. SAFE SITTER

Presented by certified Safe Sitter instructors, this program teaches 11- to 13-year-olds to be responsible, creative babysitters with special emphasis on how to handle emergencies. COMMUNITY HEALTH FAIR

N.J. BARIATRIC AND METABOLIC INSTITUTE (NJBMI) AT MONMOUTH MEDICAL CENTER: NEW PATIENT WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY LECTURE

If you are 100 pounds or more overweight, you can’t afford to miss this educational lecture which will explain everything you need to know about weight-loss surgery.
