Shell Shocked: Free Film Viewing & Discussion with Director on Gun Violence

On Sunday May 4, the public is invited to a free viewing of “Shell Shocked,” a film depicting the horrific effects of gun violence against New Orleans children.  After the film’s viewing, director and producer John Richie will lead a discussion about gun violence, especially how it affects youth. 

Guns and violence have permeated American culture, including the Jersey Shore. The stories make the headlines and are soon forgotten by too many.  This film and the discussion following with Richie provides an opportunity to explore and reflect on the subject. 

The first step in fixing any problem is acknowledging that it exists and opening a real dialogue about it.  That is what John Richie is working toward.  Together we CAN make a difference.  Please be CAUTIONED that this documentary may prove stressful to those already affected by gun violence, especially those who have lost a loved one.  Middle and high school youth may attend at their parents' discretion.

Richie was inspired to create this film on gun violence after working with youth at an 2008 anti-violence event, where he found every child had been directly affected by gun violence, either losing a family member or friend.

Richie, who produced most of the film in 2010, highlighted people’s stories in various neighborhoods rampaged by gun violence.  One young man stated, 
“We had no choice but to become numb.”  An adult observed: “What (the youth) are really saying is look at me – I matter.” Richie will be traveling from New Orleans to speak at this screening.
