Red Bank Fields No Condition for Play

Red Bank officials are notifying residents that access to the borough’s athletic fields may be delayed this spring because of the unusually wet and cold winter the area has and continues to experience.

Council members Ed Zipprich, liaison to the borough’s Public Works Department, and Juanita Lewis, liaison to the borough’s Parks and Recreation Department, noted that routine maintenance on the fields has been pushed back this season as snowy and frozen conditions – now mostly soggy conditions – have made it impossible for work to begin.

Snow at the Count Basie athletic fields was mostly gone Monday. Last week’s late high temperatures succeeded in melting a good portion of the snow that remained, but the surface of the fields was mostly mush and covered by geese feces in many places.

Large mounds of snow plowed dumped in the parking lots throughout this winter still remain, though they continue to shrink.

Public works and parks and recreation field maintenance, which was supposed to begin recently and finish up early in March, has been delayed. Once the fields dry work will begin. Borough officials warn, however, that the start of upcoming baseball and softball seasons may be delayed slightly.
