Salvation Army Volunteer Loves Spreading the 'Joy of Giving'

Marylyn Richner of Red Bank has been manning the Salvation Army's famous red kettle for more than 30 years.

Richner, a resident at Wesleyan Arms senior community, has been on duty eight hours a day, six days a week at the Monmouth Mall.

“I love it when parents model charity for their children. I lower the kettle to their height and can see from the broad smiles that even young children experience the joy of giving. Pending parental approval, I reward them with a candy cane," Richner said.

The volunteer has been a "soldier" in the Salvation Army since she was 21.

The Salvation Army’s collections help to provide Christmas dinners, clothing, toys, financial assistance, aid to needy families, seniors, the homeless and families of prisoners.
