An Opening Reception for "HEADS," An Outdoor Exhibition presented by New Jersey Museum of Contemporary Art, will be held on Sunday, August 19, 2012 from 5:00 - 7:00 pm in the Upstairs Atrium of The Galleria, 2 Bridge Avenue, Red Bank. The public is invited to come celebrate this exciting cultural event, and to meet the artist and curator. The party is free but guest attendance is limited. "HEADS" will feature more than 50 large-scale paintings by Romanian artist, Dumitru Gorzo, from August 19 – October 14, 2012. Installed on private and public exterior walls across downtown Red Bank, New Jersey, the public art exhibition will be free, open 24 hours a day, and accessible to everyone.
Red Bank was selected to showcase the exhibition because of its rich history, dynamic cultural organizations, easy train access, and great architectural buildings. The exhibition will effectively transform the historic town on the Navesink River into an open museum portrait gallery. This is the first time in New Jersey that a landmark museum-curated exhibition will take place outside museum gallery walls.
Unlike events that have a fixed location, "HEADS" will require people to walk throughout downtown Red Bank. The increased visitors will generate commerce for hotels, restaurants, retail, and other local businesses. Visitors will see the paintings on exterior walls of the Anderson Building, Count Basie Theatre, Buona Sera Ristorante, Elsie’s Subs, Better Housekeeping Shop, the Hamilton Building, Front St. Trattoria, and the Red Bank Public Library.

Mayor Pasquale Menna says, "I’m thrilled New Jersey Museum of Contemporary Art chose Red Bank for its public art exhibition HEADS. I can’t wait to see all the paintings hung on buildings across the town and groups of students enjoying an out-of-classroom encounter with contemporary art. I’m hoping the museum finds a building to make their permanent home here and that the community will join me at their opening reception August 19 at The Galleria.”
About the Artist
Dumitru Gorzo (b. 1975) is from the village of Ieud, Romania. He received an advanced visual arts degree from the National University of Fine Arts in Bucharest. Gorzo’s methods of working have ranged from street prankster, to performance artist, to studio painter and sculptor — effectively evading any strict categorization. In 2006 he was the subject of a major solo exhibition at the Romanian National Museum of Contemporary Art in Bucharest, which devoted an entire floor to his works.
About the Curator
Dr. Marek Bartelik studied art at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and earned his Ph.D in art history from the Graduate Center of the City University in New York. Dr. Bartelik is an art critic, art historian, independent curator, and president of the International Association of Art Critics. He has taught modern and contemporary art at Yale University and MIT, and has written for Artforum International for the last 20 years.
