More Towns to Get Pink Paint Treatment

The breast cancer awareness campaign known as Paint the Town Pink welcomes five new towns this year.

The pink is spreading.

The annual mammography awareness campaign that sees businesses and homes decked out in full pink paraphernalia known as Paint the Town Pink will include five new towns this year, Riverview Medical Center recently announced.

In addition to Pink Bank (Red Bank), Pink Beach (Monmouth Beach), and Pink Haven (Fair Haven), which have been a part of Paint the Town Pink for all or some part of its five years will this year be joined by Atlantic Pinklands (Atlantic Highlands), Pinkdel (Holmdel), Little Pink (Little Silver), Pinkson (Rumson), and Pinkbury (Shrewsbury).

According to a release from the Red Bank hospital, Paint the Town Pink was first create with the goal of encouraging women 40 and over to seek annual mammograms. A focus of the event has been on raising money to help provide mammography to the uninsured and underserved in the community. Paint the Town Pink promises participation from hundreds of businesses in the area as well as the return of the "Pink Your House" contest, all with the goal of going bigger and pinker.

Last year, 365 homes and 205 businesses located in Pink Towns . Among the events that saw thousands of participants were the Pink Plunge at Monmouth Beach - think polar bear plunge but with the benefit of a slightly warmer ocean temperature - and a community fun and awareness event held at Riverview.

In Shrewsbury, officials were excited about the prospect of their town being included in the Pink cause. In addition to painting a pink line down Broad Street - the pink line is often a signature for Pink Towns - the borough plans on decking its gazebo and some of its grounds out in pink.
