Shrewsbury Slaughterhouse Accused of Inhumane Treatment of Calves

Catelli Brothers on Broad Street has been shut down by federal officials as an investigation gets underway.

Slaughterhouse operations at Catelli Brothers in Shrewsbury are under scrutiny after an undercover video came to light that alleges inhumane treatment of calves as they are prepared to be killed.

The edited video, said to have been shot by an investigator with the Humane Society of the United States at the Broad Street abattoir, shows sick or injured veal calves being inhumanely handled. One part shows animals still conscious despite numerous attempts to know them out during the slaughtering process. Another calf, unable to walk, is entirely lifted off the ground by the tail by a worker and forced to hobble to its slaughter.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture reacted by ordering Catelli Bros. of Shrewsbury to suspend its operations on Friday, according to the Humane Society of the United States. The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service withdrew its federal inspectors, which are required for slaughter operations, the report said.

Catelli Brothers, a purveyor of veal and lamb products, issued a statement on its website saying they are cooperating with federal officials.

"We are deeply concerned about the allegations that have been made regarding the care of calves at our facility," said Tony Catelli. "Any mistreatment of animals at our facility is unacceptable, and our established practices strictly prohibit the processing of any downed calves."

The statement also said that Catelli has retained its own expert in animal handling that visited the site where the allegations occurred.

The HSUS is campaigning for the USDA to close what it calls "a loophole in federal policy" that does not give calves the same protection of downed adult cattle.

This is terrifying and disgusting. I can't even say anything else.

Hard to believe the owners didn't know what goes on here. It's obvious the employees were comfortable doing what they do here. " Lucy, you have some explaining to do "

Employees simply GOT CAUGHT

Can anyone please explain ___ Why or How it matters? The animals are going to be Killed, slaughtered. Nothing can possibly be more inhumane than killing and slaughtering??? Yet, we all want such foods to eat. When we go fishing we let the fish flop around in the boat until it dies __ it that any better??
Sal January 28, 2014 at 01:25 AM
The solution is very simple __ the people from the Human Society who are complaining should be in-charge of all the slaughtering themselves. That way they can do all the killing and slaughtering of each animal to their own high standards and using their own satisfactory methods.

Sal, your suggesting that since the animals are going to be slaughtered, it doesn't matter how it's done? Like most people, we all had pets that we had to bring to the vets and have them put to sleep. Your suggesting that the vets could put my pet to death anyway he chooses because the pet is gonna die anyway? You have no problem if the vet kicked , dragged, slowly tortured my pet until it finally dies? You would have no problem watching your old pet dog get put to sleep via abuse, tortured etc? You would allow your pet to be put to death abusively in front of your family, children? Surely you have some compassion? Please don't give us the same ole " Don't you eat Meat ". There is a difference in killing a animal inhumanly or with passion. You asked Why or How it matters? This is my answer.

@ Fred M Thank you for responding to the inane post by Sal. If I had done so, I would have been tempted to use inappropriate words.

When it comes to getting killed. Hillary would say: "What difference does it make?"
Shari February 03, 2014 at 04:02 PM
@ Ken - it makes a world of difference! That is the reason for the laws that exist in the handling of animals to be used for meat consumption. There are laws pertaining to the treatment of downed cattle but not for the cases of downed calves. The HSUS is trying to have the laws apply to both. The age of the animal makes NO difference in the method by which it's handled. Unfortunately, these animals are slaughtered to be used as food. There is NEVER a reason to treat any animal inhumanely while it is still alive and breathing. And NO - I do not eat any meat products whatsoever.
