Smith Barney Loses Face

The vacant Broad Street location had its letters removed Tuesday.

With Morgan Stanley having recently completed an expansion of its Red Bank headquarters on Linden Place, adding more than 7,000 square feet of office space and 50 additional parking spots, the Broad Street home of Smith Barney had become a bit redundant.

On Tuesday, crews and a crane set to work removing the Smith Barney letters from the facade of 89 Broad Street, signaling an official end to the independent offices of the multinational financial investment firm, which was purchased from debt-ridden Citigroup by Morgan Stanley in 2009.

Employees located in the Smith Barney building have been relocated to Morgan Stanley's offices leaving the prominent downtown landmark vacant, for now at least.
