PHOTOS: Shrewsbury Menorah Lights Up the Foggy Night

Monday's menorah lighting at Shrewsbury's Borough Hall brought the Festival of Lights to the historic Four Corners and brightened a foggy night with candles, tradition and even a little magic.

The second annual event, with plenty of cub scouts, borough officials and members of the Jewish community in attendance, focused on the lighting of the large menorah not far from the borough's Christmas tree, but also featured refreshments and a magician who delighted the children in attendance.

Pamela and Jonathan Hemel of Shrewsbury organized the first event last year and enlisted the Chabad of the Shore for assistance.

Pamela said she received incredible support from the whole Shrewsbury community, including the mayor and council.

Rabbi Label Schapiro, director of Chabad of the Shore, reminded the crowd of the history of the holiday and the intention behind its celebration. "The idea is that a little light can push away a lot of darkness," he said.

Mayor Donald Burden said at the beginning of the lighting, "It's only fitting and appropriate that this menorah ... be integrated into this little corner or the world as a reminder of free speech."
