Red Bank Dedicates 9/11 Memorial

Firefighters memorial honors two fallen Red Bank residents and includes a piece of wreckage from the attacks.

The Red Bank Volunteer Fire Department dedicated a recently installed 9/11 memorial Monday morning at its Fallen Firefighter Memorial located just outside of borough hall on Monmouth Street.

The memorial, which includes two pillars designed to resemble the World Trade Center towers and a piece of twisted steel recovered from the site of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, was dedicated in a ceremony that included the memorializing of two Red Bank residents and volunteer fire fighters.

Mark Hemschoot was one of two Red Bank residents to die in the Sept. 11 attacks. Working on the 105th floor of the south tower at the time of the attack, Hemschoot, 45, did not make it out.

Hemschoot was a volunteer firefighter with Liberty Hose.

Red Bank Mayor and Red Bank Volunteer Fire Department Chaplain Pat Menna welcomed the addition of the 9/11 memorial to the borough's fallen firefighter memorial.

"It's a reminder of what happened. It's also a rallying call for us to be vigilant, to remember those who did sacrifice their lives and to honor their memories," he said following the ceremony.

Also honored was Albert Doremus, former fire chaplain and owner of . According to Menna, Doremus, who died in 1990, suffered a heart attack while presiding over the funeral for another fire fighter and died the next day.

His name was added to the list of fallen firefighters because he death came in the line of a fire fighter's duty, Menna said.
