Red Bank Native Takes Second in Afghanistan Race

U.S. Army Spc. Cassandra Lio tied for second in the 7th annual Pat Tillman Run in Afghanistan.

A Red Bank native and current United States Army specialist recently placed second in the 7th annual Pat Tillman Run, a 4.2-mile run or walk event open to civilians and military service members and held in Afghanistan.

According to Defense Video and Imagery Distribution System, a U.S. military news outlet, U.S. Army Spc. Cassandra Lio, of the 430th Military Police Detachment, finished tied for second in the race's womens group. Lio is a Red Bank native.

The race was held April 20 at Forward Operating Base Salerno in Khowst Province, Afghanistan. More than 250 people competed in the race.

Winners, according to DVIDS:

In the men’s category:

First place: U.S. Army Capt. Phil Sakala, a Fire Support Officer for the 1st Battalion (Airborne), 501st Infantry, Task Force Blue Geronimo, from Las Cruces, N.M.

Second place: U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Noe Perez with A Company, 725th Brigade Support Battalion (Airborne), Task Force Centurion, from Alice, Texas

In the women’s category:

First place: U.S. Army 2nd Lt. Sheila Wilson, with the 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, Task Force Spartan

Second place: A tie between U.S. Army Sgt. Isela Ulman, a human resource specialist with the 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, Task Force Spartan, from Shiocton, Wis., and U.S. Army Spc. Cassandra Lio with the 430th Military Police Detachment, from Red Bank, N.J.
