Summer Camps on the Water in Red Bank and Beyond

A round-up of summer camps in our area. Is your favorite camp missing? Well then, add it.

You Red Bank and Shrewsbury residents spend your days crisscrossing the Shrewsbury and Navesink rivers in your car, but what about floating along with the breeze? Here are a few ways to get your kids (and you) on the water this summer.

For a summer of sailing:

These three clubs offer sailing lessons for members and non-members. Prices vary and courses are usually eight weeks. All have lessons for adults as well.

For five days of paddling on the Navesink:

  • River Rangers, sponsored by the Navesink Maritime Heritage Association, offers week long camps where kids paddle homemade canoes up and down the navesink. Rope swings, picnics and water fights are a guarantee. Paddlers will visit various from spots , and Red Bank. Camps run from 8:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. The cost is $200.

For four to five days on the ocean:

  • Jersey Shore Skim Camp, run by Sea Bright resident Felicia Stratton, who is also the director of Skim Bash. Besides lessons in how to skim board, participants receive a t-shirt, board wax, sunglasses, stickers, and a bunch of other goodies. Camps run from 9 - 11 a.m. The cost is $200 for four days.
  • Summa Love, a surf and beach yoga camp held in Deal. Students get a mix of yoga, surfing and beach games at this camp. Young surfers will learn all the basics, plus surf etiquette and ocean safety. The sessions are 4.5 hours. The cost with all equipment included is $350 for 5 days.

For kids with disabilities:

  • Pigdog Surf Academy, in addition to teaching fully abled kids and adults, Pigdog this year launched a program called Surfer's Refuge for kids with disabilities. Clinics are two hours. Email Chris for rates and details.
