'Two River Little League' to be Created

The league will comprise children of Rumson, Fair Haven, Little Silver, Red Bank and Shrewsbury.

Children of the Two River area, including those in Red Bank and Shrewsbury, will soon have a little league of their own.

Slated to be called The Two River Little League, the formation of the charter is set to comprise the kids of five area towns bordering one another: Rumson, Fair Haven, Red Bank, Shrewsbury and Little Silver.

The league, according to a release, will "serve boys and girls playing baseball and softball, respectively for ages 5 to 16."

The Two River Little League will join District 19 within New Jersey Little League Division Three; and its board of directors will be comprised of 10 representatives, or two from each town. They are as follows:

    •    Chris Kelly Shrewsbury, president,
    •    Brendan Gilmartin, Shrewsbury
    •    Rafe Fernandez, Fair Haven, vice president
    •    Anthony Mazzucca, Fair Haven
    •    Rick Brandt, Little Silver, sectretary
    •    Doug Glassmacher, Little Silver
    •    Memone P. Crystian, Red Bank, vice president-softball
    •    Mike Ballard, Red Bank, treasurer
    •    John Caruso, Rumson
    •    Bob Oakes, Rumson

Organizers, according to the release, feel that such a league, incorporating five towns under one charter is unique and may serve as "a model that other communities may wish to emulate."

In addition to the structure that bringing an international little league team to the towns offers, organizers said in the release that they wanted "to give our kids the excitement and aspiration to one day play in the Little League World Series" while encouraging an upswing in a declining travel sports program.  The league, they added, will also afford more girls an opportunity to play softball.

The players will be identified by hometown, with the exception of girls softball, which will be organized according to age level.

The group is slated to meet on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Red Bank Regional High School, Ridge Road, Little Silver in Room 109.
