What Should Go Here?

The deteriorating Bradlees/Foodtown Shopping Center could be an asset to the community...but how? Contribute your ideas to the conversation.

The red-roofed Bradlees and Foodtown shopping center on Route 36 in Hazlet has been vacant for a dozen years. Over time, the huge building has fallen into silent disrepair, and there is no longer any life in the barren parking lot --- no clattering shopping carts, wheezing trucks, or busy customers.

The property is in a commercial zone, bound by residential Poole Avenue in Hazlet and Stone Road in Union Beach. It is owned by Vornado and on a long lease to Stop & Shop, which has a store up the highway in Keyport.

There is 120,000 square feet of retail space on approximately 10 acres. The Bradlees section is not directly facing traffic on Route 36, but instead looking out onto the parking lot and an undeveloped grassy lot. Across the Highway is a Saker Shoprite.

Retail Commercial Broker Michael Testa of Jeffery Realty, who represents the controlling interest of the property, has received inquiries.  So far there has not been the right fit.

What would you like to see in this spot? What is the neighborhood missing? What does it need less of? Tell us in the comments.

How about a YMCA ??? It could provide a low cost gym alternative for families .$50 a month for a whole family with indoor pools and basketball courts and racket ball! ! Have different exercise classes and a safe place for kids to go and have some fun and stay out of trouble

Wegman would be awesome!!! But we'll get a build a bunch of condos. No schools. More traffic. Kill the last of the area that was worth loving in.
