Todd Akin and Extreme Right Threaten the Gains Women Made over the Past 100 Years

American women, Democrats, Republicans, Independents, WAKE UP! The extreme right is conspiring to take away the freedoms our great-grandmothers fought so hard for us to gain.

By now, everyone has surely heard the controversy of the extremist Missouri Congressmen, Todd Akin, who is running for Senate.

In a recent television interview, he espoused his beliefs of what he termed "legitimate rape." According to Congressman Akin, who frighteningly sits on the House Science Committee, pregnancies do not result from "legitimate rape" since the magic of a woman’s uterus actually prevents the sperm from fertilizing an egg in a “legitimate rape.”

This justifies the GOP’s denial for abortion funding in cases of rape. The real frightening thing about this revelation is that it isn’t extreme at all, not in today’s national Republican Party that has been hijacked by Mr. Atkin and his ilk.

They continually reject science, free choice and compromise of any sort to their positions. They have all but driven any reasonable Republicans out of Congress.

Mr. Akin’s ideas have been codified in law and co-sponsored by our new Vice Presidential Candidate for the United States, Paul Ryan, with overwhelming Republican support.

Additionally, the two co-sponsored a more extreme bill proposed by the Republican-led Congress known as the “Personhood Amendment,” which grants full rights to fertilized human eggs and would outlaw not only abortion, but also the most popular forms of contraception and even in-vitro fertilization.

American women, Democrats, Republicans, Independents, and those ladies who are just not paying attention — WAKE UP!  Your way of life is threatened.

For years, this extremist, but politically-adept, group has been conspiring to take away the freedoms our great-grandmothers fought so hard for us to gain. These ideas are in the Republican platform and have been for years. They are just getting ever so closer to realization and this election could be the tipping point.

During President Obama’s administration, the Republicans have opposed the Liddy Ledbetter Fair Pay Act (the first law the President signed). They voted against renewing the Violence Against Women Act.

They have voted many times to appeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA,) which guarantees free contraception and female wellness-care services including mammography and pap smears. The ACA also prohibits insurance companies from denying insurance for pre-existing conditions, terminating insurance for illness and charging higher premiums to female policy holders.

Monmouth County Women For Obama supports the president’s reelection for many reasons, but nothing is closer to our hearts than safe-guarding the progress women have made in society over the past 100 years.

Women’s success is vital for the success of our families and our nation. Very few households can depend on only one-income earner and many families are supported by women alone.

Monmouth County Women for Obama plans five forums in the county to discuss issues that women care about. Come join us and open your eyes to what is at
stake:

Once again, the Left Wing people here run away from answering a simple question. What cowardice.
    marylou August 29, 2012 at 02:44 pm
You do realize that there are people who have led healthy lifestyles, but still have high cholesterol. If my health insurance has no problem paying for vaccines for children and yearly flu shots, they should also pay for birth control.
    marylou August 29, 2012 at 02:44 pm
Your question has been answered, but you don't like the answer.
John Jay August 29, 2012 at 02:48 pm
Give me an exact number of days, marylou. Can you answer the question? "How many days into a pregnancy is it NOT acceptable to have an abortion?"
That sounds like a simple question, doesn't it?
    Otter09 August 29, 2012 at 02:54 pm
Marylou, yes, that's why I said "life style choices" for many and genetic or direct medical need for some.
John, I gave you the answer, there is no magic number. Just don't get anyone pregnant and you won't have to worry about it.
    marylou August 29, 2012 at 03:09 pm
Otter,he will worry about it because he wants to tell others how to live their lives. It wouldn't suprise me if he also opposes most forms of birth control except the aspirin between the legs one. And,of course, once the fetus is carried to term,he loses interest in him or her.
    Otter09 August 29, 2012 at 03:39 pm
    Exactly marylou.

To marylou: Abortion Survivor Speaks Out Against Obama
http://www.politico.com/blogs/burns-haberman/2012/08/sba-list-to-launch-missouri-ads-against-obama-on-abortion-133435.html Partial Text from ad: “Many children, more than you might think, actually survive failed abortions and are born alive. I know because I’m one of them,” Ohden says in the SBA List ad. “When he was in the Illinois state Senate, Barack Obama voted to deny basic constitutional protections for babies born alive from an abortion – not once, but four times."
    marylou August 29, 2012 at 09:50 pm
Are you willing to adopt those babies? Are you willing to support them until they reach 18.In many cases, these "babies" are not full term.Have you any idea how much money it costs to care for 1 premature baby? The reason that some of these babies were aborted in the 1st place is that they were very sick or severly handicapped. If the mothers don't have the means to care for them, who will. It's hard enough to place healthy mixed race children with good families,so forget about people adopting them.People like you are always the 1st to complain about having to support the children of poor women until they are 18.You love fetuses, but lose interest in babies once theyy draw their 1st breath.
    jerseyswamps August 29, 2012 at 10:41 pm
What an ugly comment from marylou. She's deciding what life is worth saving and who should die because they aren't perfect. What's next? I suppose if the babies didn't have blue eyes and blond hair they wouldn't be any good? Then maybe we can bring religion into the equation of who should go?
    JRod August 30, 2012 at 06:27 pm
    Marilyn,
You are a complete nutjob. Akin is a moron..he does not represent Mitt Romney or the GOP. The war on women is completely bogus. Obama is the real extremist. Keep drinking the Kool Aid wacko. Jack
John Jay August 30, 2012 at 06:49 pm
TO: marylou: You're an angry person, huh? So YOU are the one who decides who lives and dies? Go away. You're spam.
    Laura August 30, 2012 at 10:17 pm
Acceptable until it's viable outside the womb. I would suggest castration as a better form of birth control. Insurance pays for viagra. It should pay for birth control or castration and I do not mean vasectomy.
Get a part time job. You're nauseating.
    Laura August 30, 2012 at 10:26 pm
Yes, he does represent the GOP. Isn't it amazing how the Conservatives (e.g. tea party) don't understand what extremism really is.
Paul Ryan is now practicing Karl Rovian campaigning. Take your candidates attributes and call them your own. AND we do know half the population is mentally challenged, after all, they elected Bushbaby twice. AND they are still looking for WMD's.
    Laura August 30, 2012 at 10:28 pm
And you're just a little irrelevant sperm. Shoo
John Jay August 31, 2012 at 12:26 am
Laura - How long have you had anger against men?
"Laura 6:28 pm on Thursday, August 30, 2012 And you're just a little irrelevant sperm. Shoo"
John Jay August 31, 2012 at 12:29 am
Laura -- You're politically ignorant. Tea Party members can hardly be labeled "conservatives". They are, by far, Libertarians and Constitutionalists. That's a big difference.
Then again, you are defending the Obama -- the most miserable failure of a President since Jimmy Carter. So what sort of relevant, and factual opinion could you possibly have today? I never thought ANYONE could make Carter look good -- congrats Oblama. "Laura 6:26 pm on Thursday, August 30, 2012 Yes, he does represent the GOP. Isn't it amazing how the Conservatives (e.g. tea party)..."
    JRod August 31, 2012 at 12:07 pm
    Laura,
You are part of the mentally challenged...you voted for some idiot w/ zero experience hoping for change. Yes, Obama gave us change..change for the worse. Jimmy Carter is loving this..he's no longer the worst Pres in U.S. history.
Peggy Devlin Blazewicz August 31, 2012 at 12:28 pm
Please remember you are talking to neighbors. Name calling is no way to prove a point! Facts work much better!
John Jay August 31, 2012 at 12:38 pm
Here's a fact: Obama lied and failed.
    Norma August 31, 2012 at 01:14 pm
Sure a father should have a say, John. He just shouldn't have the final say.
    Norma August 31, 2012 at 01:21 pm
The issue isn't when it's acceptable or not acceptable; it's when it's safe or not safe. And it should always be safe. What makes you think a woman who has carried a fetus almost to full term would suddenly decide to have an abortion? A late term abortion takes place when it is medically necessary for the mother because something negative has happened. You can't predict the future to decide when something is "acceptable" or not.
Steven Lawrence August 31, 2012 at 01:30 pm
Then tell Romney to release his tax returns. Romney lies and hides
John Jay August 31, 2012 at 01:33 pm
Steven Lawrence - Repeating Obama talking points? Romney's information is available at the Federal Election Commission (http://www.fec.gov/). Have a party!
John Jay August 31, 2012 at 01:34 pm
Obama's "Fast and Furious" gun scheme get American lawmen murdered. Why do you support Obama's illegal operation of running guns into Mexico to blame our Second Amendment?
    rch August 31, 2012 at 01:38 pm
So did Bush and thousands of our citizens died in Iraq.
John Jay August 31, 2012 at 01:42 pm
Obama lied, lawmen died. The poster "rch" claims it's OK to let Obama's henchmen to be GUN RUNNERS resulting in the murder of American lawmen and thousands of Mexican citizens.
More service members have died under Obama's watch than Bush; Obama lied, lawmen died. "rch 9:38 am on Friday, August 31, 2012 So did Bush and thousands of our citizens died in Iraq."
    rch August 31, 2012 at 01:56 pm
My comment was in response to your "Here's a fact. Obama lied and failed" not to anything about gun runners which didn't show on my screen until now. I believe both men have had their failures.
    Laura August 31, 2012 at 04:22 pm
    Jrod
Worst President would go to Bushbaby. Are you still looking for those WMD's? Tea Partiers are the nut jobs. Where was Bushbaby? I didn't see him at the convention. Lol. Probably still trying to figure out the "fool me once" expression.
    Cowgirl August 31, 2012 at 08:02 pm
As a woman it is my right to make decisions about my life. Today's Republican Party seems to think they get to make the decisions! They say they want small government yet they want to impose their values on an entire nation. I prefer the ability to make my own choices about my life. I will be voting for Obama to ensure that my freedoms are not taken away.
