Obituary: Shrewsbury Resident Eleanor Marie Christensen

Services begin on Friday.


Shrewsbury resident Eleanor Marie Christensen passed away on Sunday, Oct. 13, at Monmouth Medical Center, with her son by her side.

Born and raised on Staten Island, NY, after completing Saint Peter's High School, she continued her education and graduated from Hunter College in New York City.

Eleanor began her career as a high school English teacher while furthering her education and received her first master's degree in education from Rutgers University.

After completing her second master's degree from Seton Hall in psychology, she then began working on her doctorate degree.

She spent many years as a guidance counselor in middle and high schools in New Jersey helping, guiding and encouraging many students. She enjoyed reading, cooking, traveling the world and was an avid lover of Broadway plays and concerts.

Eleanor was known as an extremely loving and generous, highly intelligent person who celebrated life to the fullest with her family and friends.

She was predeceased by: her parents, Charles J. and Eleanor M. Gallagher; her husband of 50 years, Eric C. Christensen; and her brother, Charles J. Gallagher Jr..

She is survived by: her loving son, Charles E. Christensen; three granddaughters, Jacqueline Grace, Cheyenne Lee and Savannah Marie; her sisters, Clare M. Gallagher and Elizabeth A. Salmonsen; and brother-in-law, Roger N. Salmonsen.

She will be greatly missed by her family and her many friends.

Visitation will be held on Friday, Oct. 18 from 1 to 3 and 5 to 7 p.m. at the John E. Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Avenue, Red Bank, NJ 07701.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, Oct. 19, 10 a.m. at Church of the Nativity, 180 Ridge Rd., Fair Haven.
