Popular Shore Musician Dies at 56

Services begin on Saturday


Herbert A. Van Note III, 56, of Barnegat, formerly of West Long Branch, died Sunday, Jan. 5, at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania with his daughters by his side.

Known as Herbie, he was born in Long Branch and was a lifelong shore area musician who had a passion for playing the drums. He was employed by the City of Long Branch in the ground maintenance division and formerly owned a landscaping business and took much pride in his work. Herbie enjoyed fishing, camping, riding his Harley and performing with his friends in After The Reign.

He was predeceased by his mother Gloria Dennis Van Note.

He is survived by: daughter and son-in-law, Leanna and Christopher Sheldon, of Long Branch; daughter Chelsea Van Note, of Middletown; their mother, Leslie Van Note, of West Long Branch; his father, Herbert A. Van Note Jr., of West Long Branch; two sisters, Bethanne Van Note and Kathy Van Note, both of West Long Branch; and Herbie’s high school sweetheart, Susan Lowe, of Barnegat.

A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, Jan. 11, from 2 p.m. until the time of the funeral service at 7 p.m. at the Damiano Funeral Home, 191 Franklin Ave. (corner of Third Avenue), Long Branch.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Herbert A. Van Note, III Music Scholarship, P.O. Box 567, Long Branch, NJ 07740.
