Frugal Family: Girl Scout Art, Free Movies, Easter Egg Hunt

Do some good for your fellow man and yourself this week with the best deals in Monmouth County.

You're going to love the deals we have for you this week. From cinematic classics to fun for the kids, it's all here and you want to know the best thing? Two of the events are free, free, free!

Count Basie Theatre

  • 99 Monmouth Street, Red Bank

From Sunday, May 1 through Tuesday, May 3, the Count Basie Theatre is showcasing three films for FREE for singles and families to have a fun time out. Check out Finding Nemo at 2 p.m. on May 1, the cinematic classic On The Waterfront on May 2 at 7 p.m., and 1957's A Face in the Crowd on Tuesday, May 3 at 7 p.m. The event is presented by Friends of Film, The Film Foundation and The Count Basie Theatre Foundation. Tickets are free, but must be obtained through the box office.

Easter Egg Hunt

  • St. Rose of Lima Playground, Lincoln Pl., Freehold

The Freehold Borough Recreation Commission is holding the municipality's annual Easter egg hunt on Saturday, April 23 at 10 am sharp. For more information, call 732-462-4200.

Carlee A. Wines Memorial 5 Mile Run/Walk

  • Manalapan High School, 30 Church Ln., Manalapan

The fifth annual Carlee A. Wines Memorial 5 Mile Run/Walk will be held Sunday, May 22 at Manalapan High School. Participants should arrive by 8:30 am to register and check in. The run/walk begins at 9:30 a.m. You can also pre-register now through Saturday, May 7

The event costs $10 for students and $20 for adults for pre-registration. The cost for registering the day of the race is $25. The entry fee includes t-shirt, water and fruit.

All proceeds and donations will go to the Carlee A. Wines Scholarship Fund.The fund celebrates and remembers the incredible impact Carlee had on so many lives. The scholarship commemorates Carlee’s hard work and continual effort to challenge herself and others around her. The recipients reflect Carlee’s willingness to take on responsibility and exemplify Carlee’s positive outlook on life. 

Recycled Art Contest

  • Monmouth Mall, 180 Route 35 South, Eatontown

The Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore and Monmouth Mall will celebrate Earth Day in April with a recycled art sculpture contest. Girl Scouts who participate in the contest will receive inspiration from Juliette Gordon Low, the founder of Girl Scouts, who loved nature and the outdoors. Each girl will create a sculpture using recycled material to reflects one of three themes: reducing plastic waste, using energy efficiently, or planting a garden.

The grand prize winner will receive a $200 Monmouth Mall gift card and a $75 gift certificate for the Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore council shop. Additional prizes will be awarded to three different age groups: Daisy/Brownie Girl Scouts, Kindergarten and third grade; Junior/Cadette Girl Scouts, fourth through eighth grades; and Senior/Ambassador Girl Scouts, ninth through twelfth grades. Each of those prize winners will receive a $100 Monmouth Mall Gift Card and a $50 Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore council shop gift certificate.

The contest will take place at Monmouth Mall on Saturday, April 23. Girls will bring their creations between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. and judging will take place at 2 p.m. The winners will be announced at 3 p.m. All artwork will remain on display at the Monmouth Mall until Sunday, May 15.

Cooking Class at Williams-Sonoma

Williams-Sonoma is offering a class on the one thing every good cook should know how to do--use a knife. And yes, Virginia, it's totally FREE! The nice people at WS will show you the most important things about knife skills, such as a sharp edge, the correct grip and proper food placement. They'll cover serious slicing, dicing, and chopping, as well as more advanced cuts such as chiffonade, julienne, and more.
