In what was deemed the largest class "ever," the Monmouth County Police Academy graduated 127 police officers on Thursday, with several from the area on the class roster (see below).
“It is a calling to serve as a police officer,” Police Academy Director David Morris said in a release. “With that calling comes courage and integrity. These traits cannot be learned at the academy; they come from within.”
A combined graduation was held at Brookdale Community College for 66 officers who completed the 84th class of the academy’s Basic Course for Police Officers and 61 officers who completed the 39th class of the academy’s Basic Course for Class II Special Law Enforcement Officers.
The 66 who graduated from the basic course for police officers will work as full-time officers in their respective towns, while the remaining 61 “specials” will work seasonally during the busy summer months.
In her graduation address, Freeholder Lillian G. Burry told the new officers they are now community leaders and role models. “Today, you have earned the right to serve your communities as police officers,” Burry said. “This is a great privilege because there is no higher responsibility.”
“As graduates of the Monmouth County Police Academy, you will serve towns, counties and college campuses,” Freeholder Director Thomas A. Arnone said in his remarks to the graduates. “We will demand much of you. We will expect you to protect us from those who may do us harm. We will expect you to make us feel safe and protect our homes, schools and businesses. And, we will expect you to do all this with a smile on your face and a friendly hello when we pass.”
Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden and Police Academy Director David Morris congratulated each member of Class 84 and presented each new officer with a graduation certificate.
Monmouth County’s Acting Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni and Monmouth County Police Chiefs' Association President and Fair Haven Police Chief Daryl Breckenridge congratulated each member of Class 39 and presented graduation certificates as well.
“As a law enforcement officer you should always remember that you represent not just you, your families, or your respective departments, but every man or woman who has ever worn the uniform — in the past, present and future,” Acting Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher Grammicioni said. “Don’t ever lose sight of the privilege of being a law enforcement officer, and remember that the public you deal with daily is your client — they don’t work for you, you work for them.”
