Crime Rate Drops in Red Bank

Monmouth County experiences overall decline, although incidents are up statewide

Overall crime in Red Bank declined in 2011 from 2010, according to data released with the state's 2011 Uniform Crime Report.

The borough followed trends throughout Monmouth County in nearly every reportable crime statistic, although the drop was not uniform statewide. . 

The 320 incidents of crime in Red Bank declined from 341 in 2010, the Crime Report shows. Violent crimes were nearly halved, with 55 in 2010 compared to 29 in 2011. However, Red Bank experienced a slight increase in nonviolent crime over the same period, with 286 in 2010 compared to 291 in 2011.

The crime data, compiled and reported by the NJ State Police, tracked reports of murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny-theft and motor vehicle theft.

Robberies and aggravated assaults dropped dramatically from 2010 to 2011. There were 26 incidents of robbery in 2010 as compared to 10 in 2011. The reports show 24 incidents of aggravated assault in 2010, compared to 13 in 2011.

However, there were five reported rapes in Red Bank in both 2010 and 2011, and the borough experienced a homicide last year after recording no killings in 2010.

The overall crime rate per 1,000 residents dropped from 27.9 to 26.2 when comparing 2010 to 2011, while the violent crime rate was cut from 4.5 per 1,000 to 2.4 per 1,000. The overall nonviolent crime rate per 1,000 in Red Bank inched up slightly, from 23.4 in 2010 to 23.8 in 2011.

Countywide, the crime rate per 1,000 residents dropped from 24.2 in 2010 to 23.7 in 2011, and the violent crime rate fell from 2.0 per 1,000 to 1.8 per 1,000. The nonviolent crime rate also dipped, in contrast to Red Bank, with 22.2 incidents per 1,000 in 2010 to 21.9 in 2011.

Monmouth also recorded declines in every recorded violent crime category. The overall incidents of crime was 15,237 in 2010 as compared to 14,957 in 2011.

As required by statute, all law enforcement agencies in the state submit monthly and annual summary crime reports to the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, under the NJ State Police.
