Hundreds Gather to Remember "Froggy" Yarbrough, Call for Peace

A march and vigil was called a time for healing for family, friends, and community following the stabbing death of a Red Bank man.

The vigil was a time for mourning, a time to remember Larry “Froggy” Yarbrough, the Red Bank man who was fatally stabbed one week ago as, friends and family said, he only .

Hundreds marched the short distance from Pilgrim Baptist Church to Bank Street early Saturday evening where police found the 39-year-old lying in the street following an early morning altercation between two groups of men. Today, , a makeshift memorial of partially melted candles, deflated balloons, and a random collection of items are what remain.

Two men were arrested in connection with the stabbing. Red Bank residents Jose Francisco Olivares-Palma, 24, and Genarro Guerro-Montes, 19, were arrested in Lakewood hours have the incident and were charged with murder and weapons charges. Olivares-Palma was also charged with attempted murder after police said he stabbed a second man, Manuel Rosas-Oceloti, who survived the attack.

Organizers of the vigil said the event was not an opportunity to dwell on the incident or talk about retribution, but to grieve and heal. The best way to honor a man who had turned his life around and rededicated himself to helping others – and had recently extolled others to stop using social media websites to cause drama – was to continue his message, organizers said.

Though some talked about Yarbrough’s life, or the state of the neighborhood, including racial tensions between those living there, the focus of the event was spreading the word of responsibility, peace, and love.
