Police: Shrewsbury Bicycle Theft Gave Way to Neighborhood Chase

The man allegedly stole the bike from Shrewsbury Bicycle Shop.

A Red Bank man who allegedly stole a bike from a Shrewsbury bicycle shop was arrested in Little Silver on Monday morning. 

Wayne Stevens, 31, who has addresses listed at 17 Locust Ave., Red Bank, and in Asbury Park, was charged with theft and obstruction of justice.

According to a police report, Stevens stole a purple beach cruiser valued at $279 on Monday from Shrewsbury Bicycles. He was later questioned about the theft by the Little Silver police when they saw him with the bike.

Stevens then fled the interview on foot and was chased by police until he was caught on Rustic Terrace, police said.

Stevens was taken to Monmouth County Correctional Institution, Freehold, where he was held in lieu of $30,000, due to the alleged theft and active criminal warrants.

His court appearance for his Little Silver offense is set for Aug. 1; and his court appearance for his charges from Shrewsbury is set for Aug. 13.
