Red Bank Man Charged with Theft from Juvenile Diabetes Donation Jar

James Leidner allegedly stole $100 in change

A Red Bank man has been arrested in connection with the theft of $100 in loose change from a juvenile diabetes research donation jar at a Jackson WaWa.

The Jackson Police Department announced the arrest of James C. Leidner, 24, on its Facebook page after a review of the store's tape revealed him as the thief of the funds that went missing on Monday.

Leidner was identified by a police officer from another department after screen shots of the video tape were released. Leidner was contacted by Jackson officer William Campbell, who confirmed his identity and was preparing the arrest warrant, and he turned himself in.

Leidner's bail was set at $1,000 with a 10 percent option; and he was released pending a court date.

Below is the release on the Jackson Police Department's Facebook page:

"At 1052 hours on Monday November 11, 2013, Police Officer William Campbell responded to the WaWa located at 10 Manhattan Street on the report of a theft. Store employees had noticed that the container, which was estimated to contain approximately $100.00 in loose change, was missing from the counter.

"During the investigation, the officer reviewed the security video and a subject was observed removing the container and leaving the store with it during the previous evening.

"Officer Campbell obtained screen shots of the video which were released in an attempt to identify the suspect. Within 15 minutes of the pictures being released, the department was contacted by an officer from another jurisdiction who was able to identify the subject.

"Additional people who were familiar with the suspect also contacted headquarters throughout the day.

"Officer Campbell confirmed the suspect’s identity and prepared a complaint warrant charging him with the theft. The suspect was then contacted by the officer and a short time later, he responded to headquarters to turn himself in.

"Arrested: James C. Leidner, age 24 of Red Bank, NJ.

"Mr. Leidner was processed at police headquarters and charged with Theft. Bail on the warrant was set at $1,000.00 with a 10 percent option and he was released pending a court appearance after posting bail.
