Thunderstorms Cut Through Red Bank

Severe storms Thursday night caused several trees to fall. Minor outages and no injuries among initial reports.

Severe thunderstorms cut a path through Red Bank and Shrewsbury Thursday night toppling trees and sending errant limbs and branches tumbling into the streets of several neighborhoods.

In Red Bank, several trees along Harding Road fell into the roadway forcing its closure as emergency crews used chainsaws to cut branches and towed limbs off to the side of the road. One Red Bank Volunteer Fire Department described storm as "tornado-like" considering the damage to trees along Harding Road.

No injuries were immediately reported.

Scattered power outages were reported in both Red Bank and Shrewsbury, though the combined total, according to Jersey Central Power and Light's outage map, was a little more than a 100. In all, an estimated 8,000 Monmouth County residents were without power as of 9 p.m.
