Assault weapons must be banned.. ..period. Background checks might help. However, people who really want these weapons will find ways to get around this restriction. Bullying must be addressed..plays a large part in the mental health of those who commit crimes like Newtown. Videos games promoting gun use should be taken off the market.
just curious February 06, 2013 at 12:04 PM
will be held 3-5pm on what date?
Paul Heyman February 06, 2013 at 12:07 PM
A very small percentage of crimes are committed with assault weapons. You can bully a psychopath autistic they have no feelings or empathy. We need to keep psycho autistic people locked up.

A person steals guns,(WHICH IS AGAINST THE LAW), shoots and kills his own mother (WHICH IS AGAINST THE LAW), transports these guns loaded (WHICH IS AGAINST THE LAW), brings guns onto school property (WHICH IS AGAINST THE LAW), breaks into the school (WHICH IS AGAINST THE LAW), discharges the weapons within city limits (WHICH IS AGAINST THE LAW), murders 26 people (WHICH IS AGAINST THE LAW), and commits suicide (WHICH IS AGAINST THE LAW). And there are people in this country that somehow think passing ANOTHER LAW banning guns would protect us from someone like this. If you haven't noticed, people like this are not concerned about breaking laws - they only care about fulfilling their own twisted agenda. The only people that a gun ban law would impact are the LAW ABIDING CITIZENS, which will only serve to cripple the ability to protect ourselves.

Banning so-called "assault weapons" does nothing, it's pointless. In the average year, 18 people are killed with so-called "assault weapons". 453 are killed with normal rifles. 6009 are killed with handguns. 10,839 are killed by drunk drivers, 1/3 of the total killed by automobiles. "Assault weapons" aren't the problem. Neither are large capacity magazines. There has never been a mass killing where the rate of fire mattered in the outcome. The same amount of people could be killed in the same time by a pistol and 10 round magazine. It only takes like 3 seconds to change a magazine, so what's the point of banning large ones? There isn't one. Better mental health care, better background checks and a national registry that law enforcement can use will go a lot further to preventing gun deaths than banning anything. All of these are supported by a majority of NRA members (but not by the NRA itself, a clear sign its leaders are out of touch with its members).

There is no such thing as an "assault weapon". It is not even a recognized category of any type of firearm recognized by the firearms industry or gun owners in general. It is a manufactured political term that was created to gin up emotional momentum to try and pass gun control laws. After all, who could actually be "for" an "assault weapon" being owned by law-abiding citizens. The term "assault weapon" really just means "scary looking gun" and firearms that are politically characterized as such are not done so because of their function, they are done so by the way they look. Before anyone starts calling for "assault weapons to be banned now", educate yourself as to what they are, or the fact that they don't even really exist and here is a simple to follow explanation of the history of the so-called "assault weapons" everyone is so scared of http://www.assaultweapon.info While you're at it, you may want to start the movement to ban baseball bats because they kill more people each year than "assault weapons"; http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/crime-in-the-u.s/2011/crime-in-the-u.s.-2011/tables/expanded-homicide-data-table-8

@Jeff, elaborate on what you mean by a "national registry" because that is not something that the majority of gun owners want. A centralized registry is NOT a good thing.

Rosemary, why did you bother to defect from Soviet Russia?
John February 06, 2013 at 03:38 PM
I was going to reply to this insidious first post, but you guys did a good job of cleaning up. Make sure you make your voices heard at the task force. The Camden one was overwhelming pro 2a, but of course the news failed to report one person who made a pro2a statement

Why would any law abiding citizen need to have a gun that shoots multiple rounds in seconds? it doesn't seem to me that any deer or even bear would be so scary that you would need to shoot hundreds of bullets at them. so what is the point of having them other than to kill many innocents instantly?
Jeff February 06, 2013 at 04:01 PM
I don't see "assault weapons" OR baseball bats on that list. I do see 496 people killed by blunt objects, and 8583 killed by firearms. Looks like handguns is the major problem though, not rifles.
Paul Heyman February 06, 2013 at 04:55 PM
I guess this meeting is for stay at home mommies and unemployed people or those that don't work regular hours.
fed up February 06, 2013 at 05:54 PM
Hey sternbach, people like you must be banned.. ..period. I think people like lanza are the biggest bullys. Going fully armed to attack people who they know can't protect themselves. And your comment on video games is just plain stupid. I love people like you who want to take take take everything away from the rest of us. Let me guess, bleeding heart liberal?
Robert Way February 06, 2013 at 05:59 PM
@Jeff, baseball bats fall under "blunt objects (clubs, hammers, etc)", ironically, more people are murdered each year by someone's bare hands (the "personal weapons" category") than by rifles. I would disagree with your point that "handguns is the major problem, not rifles". The major problem is people who kill other people regardless of what weapon or means they use to do it. Without a doubt, firearms account for the majority of the homicides in 2011 according to the FBI Crime Report I link to above, 67% to be exact, and handguns represent the largest percentage when all the means are broken out and handguns represent almost 50% of all homicides. Someone explain to me why the gun-control advocates are not going after handguns and instead going after rifles which is where the vast majority of "assault weapons" fall under. Rifles account for 2.5% of the homicides in 2011 and roughly the same the previous years in the crime report. And the evil "military style" AR-15 rifles are a subset of that "rifles" category so they represent an even smaller percentage. You would think the anti-gunners would be going after the handguns based on these statistics but it goes to show, gun control isn't about guns, its about control.
Robert Way February 06, 2013 at 06:02 PM
@service, The Second Amendment has nothing to do with deer and bears...
fed up February 06, 2013 at 06:04 PM
Hey service, why don't you serve up some brains. law abiding citizens should be able to have any type of gun that they want to protect themselves and their families. Why do you assume that everyone that owns guns hunts? So what you are saying is that everyone thats has these types of guns has them to kill many innocents instantly. Just another cluless sheep.
NJarhead February 06, 2013 at 06:57 PM
Don' t know why this was "pending approval" since 11:52 am, but here it is again: The 2nd Amendment has NOTHING to do with hunting.
AJM February 06, 2013 at 07:37 PM
Banning Assault Rifles ...well lets put this in perspective they are Semi-Automatic, they become ASSAULT when they are used in crimes or for the left wing liberal media. NO BAN! It is unreasonable to think banning any weapon is a good idea, its only a good idea for the slime of life criminals. If you are dead set against any weapon or violent video games you do not have to take part in them...simply ignore them, do not buy them!!! You are also free to move to more restrictive parts of the country or the UK where they are outlawed but then you subject yourself to stabbings, clubbings and so on!
AJM February 06, 2013 at 07:43 PM
Did we forget the only citizens to save their family owned stores during the Califoirnia riots were those with Semi-Automatic rifles...how about the 15 year old boy that saved himself and his sister when the 2 dirtbags were breaking into their home from both the front door and window. Robert is 100% on the money! Could not have put it better myself! Bravo!!!
AJM February 06, 2013 at 07:46 PM
first off...NJ does not allow fully automatic anything! Unless of course if you have an unrestricted CCW like Feinstein or other politicians. Semi Automatic anything can only shoot as fast as you pull the trigger and for the same reason someone woudl buy a $1,000,000 bugatti to go 240mph and the same reason ppl drink/do drugs and drive.
NJarhead February 06, 2013 at 08:03 PM
Who said anything about fully auto?
Peace B. Withu February 06, 2013 at 08:46 PM
Rosemary - I am with you. You are not alone. I am chilled to the bone by the nasty attack on you and by the response that called for people with autism to be "locked up". Scary stuff.
Paul Heyman February 06, 2013 at 11:27 PM
Not quite as scary as a mentally deficient person with a gun, knife, bat or car to kill and maim innocent people. We need to lock up these crazies. Call them autistic, nuts, sociopaths just lock them up.
Paul Heyman February 06, 2013 at 11:27 PM
Any revolver shoots 6 rounds (multiple) just as quickly as a semi-auto handgun or an assault weapon. I guess you are advocating that we all use single shot muzzleloaders huh JAckson.
