Red Bank Gets Some Snow Cash

Mayor Pat Menna announced an award of FEMA funding related to this past winter's snowstorms.

FEMA has sent Red Bank a check to cover a portion of its emergency spending on snow removal this past winter, Mayor Pat Menna announced at the borough’s council meeting Wednesday night.

The emergency management agency paid the borough $139,453.21 to help cover costs related to two snowstorms that dropped more than 60 inches – in – on Red Bank in late December and January.

According to Business Administrator Stanley Sickles, Red Bank spent more than half a million of snow emergency-related costs this winter, though the price tag was spread over two separate budgets.

Approximately $241,7000 was spent on snow remediation in 2011, Sickles estimated at a budget hearing earlier this year.

The snowstorms in the county halted services all over, especially in Red Bank, which found itself with record levels of snow. Removal took days thanks to winds of up to 50 miles per hours, leaving many homebound for significant periods of time. Gov. Chris Christie signed an application for funding from FEMA just days after Christmas.

Menna said he hopes FEMA comes through with more funding to help defray the still large costs.

“We are still hoping for more but I am very glad we’ve gotten that,” Menna said.
