Red Bank Receives Grant for Pedestrian Improvements

The $250,000 will be used to upgrade Monmouth Street and facilitate 'wayfinding' throughout the borough.

Red Bank is one of four Monmouth County towns sharing $800,000 in Local Aid grants from the New Jersey Department of Transportation, Gov. Chris Christie announced Wednesday afternoon.

According to a press release, $250,000 will be applied to improving Monmouth Street and the borough’s wayfinding, an area that recently has been identified as a concern by local business owners.

Specifically, the grant will fund Monmouth Street’s corridor streetscape and improve on existing signage in the area. Generally, streetscape projects deal with both aesthetic and safety issues. Finer details about what the grant will fund haven’t been released but it’s likely the funding will be used to develop better lighting, paint lines, create bump outs on the side walk, and other similar projects.

Wayfinding, which has been identified as a concern for business owners who say there isn’t enough signage around town pointing visitors in the right direction, is also addressed by the grant.

The borough is one of 33 municipalities or countries throughout the state sharing approximately $7.6 million in grant funding. The other Monmouth County grant recipients are Allentown, Atlantic Highlands, and Belmar.
