President Barack Obama has had his chance, now it’s time to hand over the reins to someone with the experience who can pull the United States through its persistent economic slump, State Sen. Jennifer Beck said.

Beck, R-11, is attending the Republican National Convention later this month to support presumptive presidential candidate Mitt Romney, whom she believes has the experience both in government and business to turn things around. Both are qualities, she believes, that Obama lacks.

“My biggest issue with our president is that I don’t think that he’s addressed the core issues that have led us to (the recession),” she said recently. “I think the investment early on (the stimulus) didn’t succeed, and the job creation he promised would come along with his leadership didn’t happen.”

Romney, former governor of Massachusetts, co-founded Bain Capital, a successful private equity firm he left in 2002 to enter politics. His connection to business is a plus, Beck said, and should help sway American voters who want to see the United States again become a nation of industry.  

Though Beck admits Romney would likely face struggles in his quest for the presidency, most notable being the challenge of overcoming an incumbent, she sees his campaign heading in the right direction.

Unlike Obama, she said, Romney has focused his campaign on the issues and his vision for the next four years. Beck said she expects Romney’s campaign to attract votes from independent voters who might have leaned toward Obama in the past but don’t any longer.

“There is a lot of disconnect in this country,” she said. “I think a lot of people who supported (Obama) in the past don’t any longer.”

The Republican National Convention will be held in Tampa, Fla. from Aug. 27 to Aug. 30. The Democratic National Convention will be held a week later beginning Sept. 3 in Charlotte, NC.
