Signs Signal Shrewbury's No Idling Policy

After passing a resolution outlawing idling while parked, the borough installs signs as a heads up to motorists.

When Shrewsbury's Council while parked at the behest of its environmental commission in June, officials said the idea wasn’t to raise money, but awareness. Now, they’re making good on that promise.

With idling a contributing factor to increased pollution, greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental and health-related issues, Shrewsbury is distributing informational pamphlets to motorists and installing no idling signs in various locations throughout the borough.

The signs read “No Idling. Young Lungs at Work,” and depict two children standing in a cloud of fumes produced by an idling car. In all, 15 signs are being erected throughout town, including at public parks and Shrewsbury Boro School, where parents often idle while dropping off or picking up their kids.

Of the signs, five were purchased with a grant through the Community Partners initiative, and an anonymous Shrewsbury family donated the remaining ten.

The Shrewsbury Green Team says the effort is a community one and needs the support of residents and business owners alike. Not only will the no idling rule improve quality of life, its members said, but the resolution also moves the borough closer to the distinction of a Sustainable New Jersey community.
