Banking and Insurance Commish Reads to Shrewsbury Students

Department of Banking and Insurance Acting Commissioner and borough resident Ken Kobylowski read Dr. Suess' I Can Read With My Eyes Shut and Great Day for Up! at as part of Read Across America Day on Friday.

"The students were very attentive and respectful. It was a real pleasure to spend some time with them and emphasize to them the importance of reading," Kobylowski said in a statement.

Cheryl Quinn, the school’s librarian, said the importance of reading is emphasized beyond March 2. Reading is stressed and encouraged throughout the year.

“This is not done for just one day. We want children to understand that reading is the basis for everything; it ties into math, science and language arts. The skills carry over so the learning is thematic and deep,” Quinn said.

Read Across America, which was started in 1998, is a nationwide reading celebration that schools hold annually on or near March 2, the birthday of Theodor Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss.
