RBR Gives a Boost to a New Year's Resolution of Being Studious and Fit

The high school has bike desks

In the fight against obesity that challenges America and its children, every little weapon in the arsenal helps, as Red Bank Regional High School (RBR) officials see it.

So, when RBR Media Specialist Kathy Smith was calculating her furniture budget last year, she took the opportunity to make her choices ones that would not only give students more suitable place to sit and study, but also keep them fit in the mix, according to a release.

As students use the Media Center every day for research, classes or for a gym exemption, she thought, “Why not introduce them to movement?”

“And when I researched the desk bikes,” she said in the release, “I learned that I could get five for the same price as two library chairs!”

This fall, the five exercise bike desks arrived in the media center to some curiosity and skepticism.

“When I first saw them, I asked, ‘What is a bike doing in the library?’” senior Ryan Grant said.

Grant’s feelings were common.

“People thought I was going to turn the Media Center into a gym," Smith said. "But the feedback has been very positive.”

The first student who used the bike desk, she said was thrilled that he had done his math homework and five miles on the bike all in one.

The student body is now requesting that the school district add more bike desks to their library.
