Week in Sports: RBC Goalie Shines

Red Bank Catholic goalie Chet Tooker leads the Caseys against a high-powered Dragons offense.

Athlete of the Week:  Chet Tooker, Goalie, Red Bank Catholic High School

The Red Bank Catholic Caseys ice hockeygot off to a slow start to 2011-12, and while they couldn’t record a win against the Brick Dragons on Dec. 27, goalie Chet Tooker assured his team that they wouldn’t suffer their third loss of the young season.

Tooker allowed only two goals against the Dragons’ high-powered offense this week, and recorded an impressive 28 saves along the way. Thanks to Tooker, previously 5-1 Brick was held to less than three goals for only the third time this season. Before their matchup with Catholic, the Dragons had scored a remarkable 31 goals in their previous six games.

Tooker received help on the offensive end from teammates Bobby Stenson and Trevor Grossman, who, respectively, recorded a goal each for the Caseys.

Game of the Week: Toms River East @ Rumson-Fair Haven – Girls Basketball, Dec. 27

After defeating Wall High School convincingly in the first round of the WOBM Christmas Classic at Toms River North High School’s Pine Belt Arena, the Bulldogs of squeaked out a close one in their quarterfinal matchup against Toms River East. Jess Harvey scored 11 of her game-high 15 points in the second half as the fourth-seeded Dogs advanced past the Raiders 51-43.

Unfortunately for Rumson-Fair Haven, their win pitted them against top-seeded Manasquan in the semifinals two days later, a game they’d eventually lose.

Upcoming Game to Watch: Middletown South @ Christian Brothers Academy – Wrestling, Jan. 3

Coming off an impressive showing in their 19th Annual Colt Classic Tournament, Christian Brothers Academy hosts Middletown South this week.

One South wrestler to watch in this one include senior Nick Herring who weighs in at 182-pounds. Herring entered the season with 92 overall wins in his three-year career as an Eagle, just 21 shy of the school record, currently held by Glenn Pritzlaff.

The Eagles finished third overall at this year’s TCNJ Pride Tournament, with six different wrestlers winning medals, including Taylor Hendrickson who won first place in the 195-pound bracket.
