LEARN-TO-ROW DAY

Saturday, June 16 is Learn to Row Day at Navesink River Rowing. From 9am to 1pm, visitors to the site (at the foot of Maple Avenue, off West Front Street in Red Bank NJ), can sample a variety of free, hands-on rowing experiences. This event is free and open to the public.

NRR has been offering men, women and teens affordable access to all aspects of the sport of rowing since 1983. The group maintains a fleet of boats for members to use from May through late October and provides lessons, coaching and summer youth programs in June, July & early August. 

“Each year, on Learn to Row Day we open our site to the public,” explains NRR Board President, Kay Vilardi of Little Silver, “Anyone who is interested can come down, see our facilities, try out some of our equipment and even get into a boat to learn a little rowing from NRR volunteers and coaches. It’s a fun, free event that the whole family can enjoy.”

Although you must be at least 14 to enroll in one of NRR’s highly regarded summer programs and 18 for full boat-use membership privileges, on Learn to Row day, younger, school-age children can also get in a boat and give it a try. 

There is no upper age limit, not on Learn to Row day - or for rowing in general. It is not uncommon to meet recreational and competitive rowers in their 70s or 80’s. It’s never too late to take up the sport.

Along with Learn-to-Row Day demonstrations, site tours and mini-lessons, NRR members and coaches will also be on hand to answer questions and share their rowing experiences. Proceeds from the sale of NRR logo merchandise will go towards the group’s Community Outreach efforts, including Reach Out and Row (ROAR) “rowerships” that enable under-served youngsters to participate in NRR youth programs.
