RBR's Sickels Signs With Penn State

Red Bank resident taking his talents to the Nittany Lions

Red Bank Regional student Garrett Sickels has signed with Penn State University.

The Red Bank resident will take his football talents to the Nittany Lions after a senior season in which he had 91 tackles and 12 sacks for a 4-6 Bucs team and was honored with a spot in the Army All-American Bowl.

The defensive end never wavered in his commitment to Penn State, despite the team being hit with sanctions following the Jerry Sandusky molestation scandal.

"I always told my parents I had two rules about committing," Sickels told All-Shore Media. "I would never de-commit once I made a commitment, and I would never commit on site while I was visiting a school because you see kids get so pumped up in the moment that they don't take the time to go over it in their head."

Sickels was a highly recruited player, ranked 101 overall in Rivals 250 and 228 on the Scout 300. The PennLive blog notes he is the top-rated defensive player in Penn State's 2013 class and "has a realistic chance of seeing the field as a true freshman."
