Cancer Survivors Invited to New Session of LIVESTRONG at the YMCA

At age 50, Michele Battista was diagnosed with colon cancer.   Surgery and chemotherapy left her fatigued and unable to handle simple household chores or to even walk without severe muscle pain. She turned to The Community YMCA to help her regain strength. Through LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, a free 12-week, small group exercise program designed for cancer survivors, she not only reclaimed her health but found a caring support system as well.

“The LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program allowed me to go at my own pace, learn what exercises are safe, and get encouragement to increase my goals,” Battista said. The best part about this program is you’re in a setting with others who have experience with this disease,” she added.

The Y’s Family Health and Wellness Center in Red Bank is offering a new session of LIVESTRONG starting Monday, September 16, 2013, and invites cancer survivors 18 or older to participate.  Anyone who has had surgery, chemo or radiation related to cancer may participate in the program. Medical clearance and a meeting with the program coordinator are required for participation.

Cancer is a life-changing disease that takes a tremendous physical and emotional toll on those affected, said Linda Ambis, Vice President of Health & Wellness at The Community YMCA.  Through LIVESTRONG, participants work with Y staff trained in supportive cancer care to safely achieve their goals such as building muscle mass and strength, increasing flexibility and endurance, and improving energy levels and self-esteem, Ambis said.

Participants meet for a variety of classes including strength training and yoga, and a group consultation with a Y nutritionist, Ambis said. Baselines are taken at the beginning and end of each 12-week session to determine increases in strength and ability as a result of the program.

Battista said the program was instrumental in helping her to recuperate from colon cancer. “The fitness staff is trained to know how much they can push a patient, and know how to listen and hear your needs beyond the physical ones,” Battista said.

The fall session of LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. For more information call 732.741.2504, ext.16, or e-mail LiveStrong@cymca.org.
