In what was deemed the largest class "ever," the Monmouth County Police Academy graduated 127 police officers on Thursday, with several from the area on the class roster (see below). “It is a calling to serve as a police officer,” Police Academy Director David Morris said in a release. “With that calling comes courage and integrity. These traits cannot be learned at the academy; they come from within.” A combined graduation was held at Brookdale Community College for 66 officers who completed the 84th class of the academy’s Basic Course for Police Officers and 61 officers who completed the 39th class of the academy’s Basic Course for Class II Special Law Enforcement Officers. A Hurricane Sandy victim from Sea Bright now faces up to five years in prison after being arrested and charged Wednesday with defrauding the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) of more than $12,000 in Transitional Shelter Assistance (TSA) grant money, Acting Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni announced. William Nagle, 51, who rented an apartment at 4 Center St., Sea Bright, allegedly bilked FEMA’s Transitional Shelter Assistance program of $12,114.25 in the form of 68 nights worth of lodging at various hotels between Jan. 14 and March 23, 2013. Jeep reported stolen and employer reported funds taken
Shrewsbury police reported the following incidents of theft in the borough, which are currently being investigated. • Shrewsbury police reported the theft of a 1998 green Jeep Grand Cherokee allegedly stolen from the area of Shrewsbury Avenue on May 14. The jeep is valued at $6,000, according to police. Patrolman Mary Ellen Jennings is investigating. • There was also a report of a theft by deception allegedly committed on May 17 in the area of Broad Street. Asbury Park man charged with stealing from Garmany in Red Bank
An Asbury Park man has been indicted on charges that he shoplifted nearly $3,000 worth of belts from the Garmany store in Red Bank. Abdus Shahid-Ali, 43, of 100 Monmouth Ave., Asbury Park, was arrested by Red Bank police in the area of Branch Avenue after he allegedly left the Broad Street store at 6:59 p.m. May 21 with nine leather belts valued at $2,725, according to the arrest complaint warrant. Ali, when confronted by police, then allegedly gave them a false name, the warrant said. During the course of the investigation, police also allegedly found Ali to be in possession of less than 50 grams of marijuana, in the form of a "rolled cigarette" in a "small clear bag" in his left sock, according to the warrant. Two officers died in the line of duty over the past year in New Jersey
The two New Jersey law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty over the past year were remembered Tuesday as courageous men who served their state proudly. Millville Police Patrolman Christopher Reeves, killed July 8, 2012 when his patrol car was rammed by a driver fleeing authorities, and New Jersey State Police Detective Sgt. James G. Hoopes, who died of a heart attack during training, were added to the list of the 467 New Jersey officers who have died in the line of duty since 1854. The annual memorial service, held at the Great Auditorium in Ocean Grove, includes a ceremonial roll call of fallen officers and a 21 gun salute. As motorists take to the roads this Memorial Day holiday, the state Division of Highway Traffic Safety is urging everyone to buckle up. The 2013 national Click It or Ticket seat belt enforcement campaign begins Monday, May 20 and runs through Monday, June 2, according to a press release from the Highway Traffic Safety. Police departments across New Jersey will crack down on motorists who are not belted. “As we kick-off the busy summer driving season it’s important that everyone buckles up every time they go out, both day and night — no excuses,” said Division of Highway Traffic Safety Acting Director Gary Poedubicky in the release. “Officers throughout New Jersey are prepared to ticket anyone who is not wearing their seat belt.” According…

McKenna faces the DWI and two related charges in Tinton Falls
Former Red Bank Mayor Ed McKenna will appear in Tinton Falls Municipal Court on June 11 to answer to the driving while intoxicated and related charges lodged against him following a single-car collision on the Garden State Parkway, officials at Tinton Falls court said Thursday afternoon.
