Jan. 12 Wonder Bar concert will both honor Clarence Clemons and raise money for schools
It's the Big Man's birthday, but it's also a chance to help get local schools' music programs hitting the right notes again. With many local school facilities affected by Hurricane Sandy, organizers to the first "Clarence Clemons Day" concert are also raising money for programs where instruments and sheet music were damaged by the storm. Jan. 12, the Wonder Bar in Asbury Park will host "Celebrating Clarence: The Big Man's Birthday Benefit" honoring Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band longtime saxophonist, who died in 2011. One of the Jersey Shore's most iconic figures will be honored annually with "Clarence Clemons Day" each Jan. 11. The state Senate last week passed a resolution sponsored by Red Bank resident Sen. Jennifer Beck that memorializes the legendary saxophonist from Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band. Clemons died last year at the age of 69 after suffering a stroke. “The New Jersey Shore would not be the same without the music of Bruce Spingsteen’s E- Street Band,” said Beck, a Republican legislator. “And the E-Street Band would not have been the same without the sound of a saxophone played by Clarence Clemons. For fans of Clarence Clemons, celebrating the legendary saxophone player's birthday may not be enough. Red Bank resident and state Sen. Jennifer Beck, R-11, has proposed a resolution that would recognize Clemons' birthday, Jan. 11, throughout New Jersey, according to The Bergen Record. Clemons was born in Virginia, but is an original member of Bruce Springsteen's E-Street Band. The saxophone player died last year at the age of 69 after suffering a stroke. It's called Veteran's Day and it honors not only those that died, but additionally have serve their country.
